Parents must participate in helping their son/daughter prepare to be job-ready upon graduation. Millennials made up about 30 percent of the United States’ unemployment population.  Despite being college-educated, many recent graduates are ill-prepared for the workforce, leaving parents wondering how to get their kids from backpack to briefcase. Bill Holland is working with parents to have critical career conversations to help their son/daughter prepare to be job-ready.

How Parents can Their Student Prepare to be Job-Ready. (1)

Bill Holland and I have talked a few times over the last five years, and the last time on the show was on episode 47 when we talked about his last book. He is a career consultant, an executive in the Talent Management space for many years, and now Principal and Founder of College to Career Catalyst, LLC. He has been featured on NPR and USA Today, and 60 other media outlets.

Here a few highlights from our discussion:

    • Parent involvement requires reassurance they are doing the right thing. Many times they need to define what the right thing is
    • Parental involvement is needed, but not as a “helicopter parent” in the negative sense. Parents shouldn’t go from not engaged at all to total disruption including the student’s desires
    • The career conversations needed between parent and student is constant
    • Parents and students should visit the career services center together. Being job-ready is a rigorous process
    • We talk about how parents need to see the scope and importance of transferable skills
    • Internships are a requirement, need to be job-ready upon hiring
    • Parent and students should agree what their profile should look like
    • Make sure your student is in position to take advantage of resources in career services
    • Every student should utilize volunteer work, course work, career services, and extra-curricular activities to prepare for internships and to be job-ready

This Sunday is Father’s Day! We will discuss how working Dads can make progress in creating  career and family balance allowing more time to be with his children.  My guest, Scott Behson, is The author of The Working Dad’s Survival Guide: How to Succeed at Work and at Home.

He is a work-life balance advocate and zealous forging discussions about Dads having work flexibility options for more face time with their families. I comment on the show that I wish this book were around ten years ago when my sons were younger. But more now than ever it is needed discussion as this book is first of it’s kind.

Scott Behson’s day job is as an Associate Professor of Management at Farleigh Dickinson University. He has a doctorate in Organizational Studies, and blogs at Fathers Work and Family. He is a regular contributor to the Harvard Business Review, Time, Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, Good Men Project, and Salary.com.

  • No matter the family relationship, the communication dynamic needs a team approach
  • Scott included a chapter of how to negotiate more flexible hours
  • He also discussed how to affect the dialogue to where remote work is good for the long term
  • Build up a good reputation at work and it’s probable to receive an opportunity for work flexibility
  • Dads can offer ways to measure performance and produce trial run proposals and progress reports
  • It’s better to look for the win-win rather than to your benefit

Job Lesson From Dad: Son, Confidence Will Give You Life Right Now

Confidence, in my opinion, can serve two purposes in anyone’s career. While teens are working, or seek work, they need to know the difference between confidence, and cockiness. They hear words like swagger (“swagga” for some), and think by walking, talking, and thinking boastfully will exude an attractive persona to  employers.  This is true if the job description calls for intimidating the face-to-face opponent.

There was a phrase in the ‘50’s (so I’m told) for cocky young men as, “…he’s smelling himself.” A cocky young man is trying to compensate for weaknesses or missing key attributes. He wants to show the world what he has to offer is as good, or better, than anyone else’s.

Noun:

    1. The feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust: “we had every confidence in the staff”.
    2. The state of feeling certain about the truth of something.

trust – faith – reliance – belief – credit – credence

Confidence is like writing a check knowing that there is money in the bank. People can sense confidence, and people will likely trust a confident person. A confident teen has to be taught how use it to obtain opportunities, especially jobs. Even if, the failure is eminent, a confident person understands the breadth of his or her skills.

Confidence is Taught

Training and influence from parents (or parent) is essential for teen jobseekers. The employment background of the parent is moot since confidence has to come from a guided and clear place. The lack of this life lesson defiles an American dream, derails a generation, and maybe a future career. It’s a gift that will keep on giving, if a parent gives installs it like a hard drive on a computer.

Confidence is Caught

Once a compelling example is witnessed by an impressionable young man or woman, they believe it’s possible, especially if it is desirable. What’s cool is that it is a renewable part of survival and success. If it’s cut off, it grows back. If it shrunk, it resizes and never at times grows stronger. It becomes a part of the body like an arm or a leg, for a teen, or anyone else.

In conclusion, confidence serves two purposes for young jobseekers, particularly teen boys.

 

  • Confidence supplies the fuel, motivation, and purpose to sell and excel in any career. It encompasses every milestone of success, accomplishments, and growth up to that point. It is the only way he or she appears employable without a ton of experience.
  • Confidence is a shock absorber for failure. Crashing, falling, and imploding is part of the adult experience. These kids can’t grow up without knowing what the virtual bottom feels like.
