Careers for People with Disabilities

Finding a job for those with disabilities is difficult. Finding a job when you’re not entirely sure what you want to do can be incredibly frustrating. Do your research and you’re bound to find a career that sparks your interest.

Below are some tips to help you look for a career, whether you want to go the traditional office job route or prefer something a little different—like starting your dog walking business. Take a look and maybe it will help you get closer to finding that perfect career.

Looking For a Work-at-home Job?
You could think about a career in customer service; sometimes you can even work at home remotely. Check different job boards, and they’re always filled with call center jobs. If you enjoy working with people via the telephone, that might be a great choice. There are plenty of other work-at-home jobs if that’s what you’re looking to do.

Jobs in sales, data entry, transcription, IT jobs, and freelance writing can all be found on internet job boards. Looking at online job boards is also a great idea to see what is needed for certain types of careers. You’ll be able to see what the required qualifications are for different jobs. Some fields require you to have job experience, and some require a degree, certification, or another type of education. Education is important, whether it’s college level, continuing education, or earning a certificate. Start educating yourself as to what you need to get that dream job.

Looking for Something Different?
Want to do something different, like work outside? Find something you enjoy doing, and do your research. Do you like plants? See about working at a nursery. Do you enjoy spending time with animals? There are many different careers in animal care. You could see about a job at a veterinarian’s office. Want to work with animals and get some exercise? How about a career in dog walking or dog boarding? In both cases, you can go to your clients or have your clients come to you, and they offer a fun way to make money while staying active.

How about working with those leading an active lifestyle?

Maybe there are sports organizations in your area that may have job openings. Check out your local area, do your research, and you will find that there are more opportunities than you realize. Or do you have another idea for creating your career? Again, it is all about the research. Read about others who have started their businesses and you’re very likely to find helpful information from those who’ve done what you wish to do.

What Do You Want?
There are jobs out there. It can be tough, but keep going. Try to stay positive and don’t give up on finding the right career. The most important thing is your happiness, you need to feel good about what you’re doing. Don’t feel like you have to follow some “rule.” You can also find lots of tips for the often dreaded job interview. Do your research, know your rights, and take your time finding the right job for you.

Donn Levie (@DonnLevie) recently wrote a very helpful article for those who are transgenders and examples for employers in a similar situation he experienced. As we know, this is still new territory in many ways although it is more common now than 10 years ago. I think people who work with transgendered coworkers will benefit from this dialogue. We dive a little deeper than the article Donn offers in hopes this will offer addition value for those who need it.

Helping Transgered Employees in the Workplace

Heres more about Donn, who is a former Fortune 500 hiring manager, author of Strategic Career Engagement (September 2015),and the book that reset the rules for successful job and career strategies: Confessions of a Hiring Manager Rev. 2.0 (June 2012),Winner of the 2012 Global eBook Award and Winner of the 2012 International Book Award for Jobs/Careers).     Here are some highlights from our discussion:
    • Personal values had much to do with how Donn wanted to handle his transgender employee
    • People are often fixed and grounded in their values and often doesn’t influence others. It is difficult to not judge and put them aside in the workplace
    • Human resources handled to announcement of the gender change of “Al” to “Alice”
    • Any overt behavior was not seen in the halls, but denigrating things were harsh as some employees whispered about the transgender co-worker
    • Values play a part of decisions, it is showcased on how you treat others, and can very well affect your personal brand
    • Value disruption can change the way people are viewed, often there’s no consideration for the transgender individual who is the cause of change
    • Hiring managers will ultimately ask who will work with the team I have, or will they affect they way the team works
    • Donn shares six qualities all successful job seekers no matter the lifestyle or changes occurred or faced

Closing the Gender Pay Gap

Lydia Frank was on episode 68 last year. I bought her back to discuss the latest study conducted by Payscale.com. Lydia is the Senior Director of Marketing for Payscale and salary negotiation columnist for Money.com. Her media contributions include TechCrunch, Havard Business Review, The Huffington Post, and CBS News.

here are a few highlights from our discussion:

  • Payscale’s latest study shows that women are make 74 to 78 cents on the dollar compared to men. Some of the nuances overlooked are the types of positions men are able to obtain such as leadership, S&P, and Fortune 500.
  • The pay level gap grows (showing the disparity between men vs. women) at each level  of career advancement
  • To help close the gap more women need to advance in men dominant fields such as STEM and promoted at the same rate as men
  • When you drill into industry, marital status, or when women opt out of work to raise children, in comparison to men when returning to work, the pay gap is significant
  • Lydia stated that we need to consider the message we send to kids with the unbalanced gender pay
  • The Payscale study also considered if there were differences in men and women who are chosen for additional training (special skills or leadership).  They found that men still received a more significant bump in opportunities and salary.
  • More companies are examining the pay gap issue, increase training opportunities
  • Despite conscience effort the disparity in the gender pay gap remains an issue
  • Men ask for four times as much as women for 30% more money
  • Women should not offer salary history. The past has no bearing on your present job opportunity

Katie Donovan is the founder of EqualPayNegotiations.com. She frequently consults with employers, employees, and policy makers. She has been seen in major media outlets such as CNBC, Forbes, NPR, and Mashable. Katie Donovan’s 360-degree background in employment, which includes working for a staffing firm, an applicant-tracking developer, and a trade association, brings a unique and pragmatic perspective to the work.

Here are a few highlights from our discussion:

  • The notion of “work hard and keep your head down” is wrong in expecting results in the increase of pay
  • Learn to be a marketer for yourself in letting people know what you’re doing. Women tend to follow rules in hopes people will see
  • Understand what the “first offer” means during the hiring process
  • Negotiating may mean a million dollars more in the duration of a career
  • Career centers in high school and college focus more on resumes and cover letters. Students must educate herself
  • In your research, find out what the men are making, not just the median between men AND women
  • Katie states to always to take the time to think about the first offer. Have the HR person walk you through their compensation package
  • We discuss if the negotiation strategy is any different in government jobs. Katie offers a great perspective here
  • Trade organizations and associations are under-utilized while researching salary. It’s worth spending a few minutes to see what they have
  • Call staffing firms and headhunters to find job openings that pay higher as an additional data point. No one source is completely accurate. Find forums and LinkedIn groups for more help
  • Resist to answer salary questions on applications. Employers are looking to exclude as many as possible if your salary expectation is too high
  • Don’t bring up anything until they make the first offer. Katie says it doesn’t have to be in writing if companies want to put the final offer in writing
