By the time that Michael Peggs of MichaelPeggs.com was working for Google, he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his career. After four years of a workplace had accessible recreation and free food, he was ready to move on. After he officially resigned he created a goodbye video that he uploaded to YouTube. He didn’t realize that this video to date received over 510,000 views!

Three years before leaving Google, Mike (or Peggs) created a blog where he wrote about careers and social media. He has been featured in Fast Company, Huffington Post, and Business Insider. He is now helping individuals and companies reach their brand building goals through story-telling.

Here are some of the highlights of our conversation:

Mike was intentional in building his personal brand

  • Mike’s video “I Quit Google” has received over 510,000 views. The video was done after his official resignation.
  • He made himself more attractive at his blog, “Career 101” that added his views, perspective, and value to future employers. He thought of himself as a product and brand before his job at Google
  • Mike positions himself as a brand and has planned it that way because it’s woven into every conversation that he has included his parents, clients, or employer

Mike prepared and sought advice about his personal brand

  • He had an internship every year in college especially during the school year. He worked for Goldman-Sachs for several years which helped him to stand out for other opportunities
  • In addition to his internships, he started several businesses such as a t-shirt company and a food delivery company (he credits this experience as his foray into tech)
  • One thing he learned as an entrepreneur was to have an “exit strategy” especially when he worked for Google. Mike says he spent four years in building “a story.”

Mike was looking to “fail forward” to strengthen his personal brand

  • Mike stated how much he loved Google, but I asked him as would others, “Why would you quit a company you loved?” I thought he had a pretty unique answer here (around 10:50)
  • When he realized that he was no longer going to grow at Google, in order to grow, he needed to “fail, fail fast and to fail forward!”
  • Mike said that our, “… feelings about failure is one of our impediments to progress…” and we act when “…our faith is more than our fear.” People should work with mentors and coaches to help them instill the faith he/she needs

Here are a few of the highlights of our conversation

    • The democratization of our society has afforded for everyone to be involved. The more social, the more we become the media with something to say. We all have the opportunity to be heard.
    • Stop broadcasting and start interacting whether a large brand or job seeker. In the book, brands that “nail it” are highlighted. Companies need to look at who have they talked to on a given.
    • Establish what your value and expertise. Once you build a brand (large or individual), you must have social proof. You must be engaged within your brand. Stop talking and start proving.
    • Social journey meaning learning along the way, with mistakes, and faux pas pass with time. Start building your social presence long before you need it.
    • If we are lacking skills, we can learn and build those skills with online tools. You can master them in a short period of time.
    • It is a “we” centered, but not to be overemphasized. The “me” can’t be lost in personal branding, so your individual accomplishments must be highlighted.

Today’s job hunting requires being proactive in every way. This means using social media and other tools including video, blogging, and Twitter.  It is one of the ways to stand out, and today’s episode we’ll discuss how important it is to be proactive and get noticed.

My guest for this episode is Mildred Talabi (@MildredTalabi).  Her latest book is The Science of Successful Job Hunting. She started out as a journalist and eventually, became a career advisor on the side. Her career advice has appeared on a Google forum (you can find this on YouTube), JobMob, and Guardian.

When I first talked to Mildred last May, she was writing a book regarding youth unemployment and the affect joblessness was having on them. Then she shifted and was inspired to write a book for the general job seeker population.

Writing about youth is not a stretch at all. In fact, Mildred works a full-time job in training 16-24 year-old youths career development.

Two things you should know about the episode recording:

1) This was recorded on Labor Day when people were in a festive mood. You will hear a little music in the background.

2) Around 4: 00, Mildred’s audio dramatically improved through the use of headphones. The audio editing reflects.

Here are some highlights from our discussion:

Mildred explains that she is an accidental  career advisor. Her background is in journalism and as an assistant editor she had to recruit people, and saw people were forward horrible CV’s.  Mildred started her first book (7 Keys to a Winning CV) while professionally working as an editor for The Guardian.

Mildred expands on the notion that passion is a good start but you can’t live off of it. Skill can be developed and that passion and skill is good.

We agree that you can pilot your passion, meaning that you can charge minimally with friends and family, and grow from then. Once you can test and get results, then you can charge more. Mildred give some examples from her career to reach that “sweet spot.”

Mildred and I discuss how job seekers should blog, stand out, and be innovative. It allows employers to Google and find you to leave a positive impression of you.

Mildred also shares how much she’s learned by blogging and reading. “There is so much available out there as far as knowledge…”

Mildred agrees that it is an employers’ market in the hiring process to eliminate candidates from the basic level.
