Personal Branding for Baby Boomers with Marc Miller

It’s hard to be found or relevant if your personal branding is not online showing your capabilities, accomplishments, and achievements. Baby boomers are still evaluating the benefits of the how and why of having an online presence. Marc Miller (@CareerPivot), founder of the blog Career Pivot makes it clear: it is necessary to stamp your personal brand on the internet. The excuses are over. If you are looking for work or looking to transition another opportunity, a meaningful personal brand is a must.

Let me tell you about Marc Miller. He is the author of his new ebook, Personal Branding for Baby Boomers, just released less than a week ago. His media features include CBS Money Watch, U.S. News and World Report, and Forbes.  His blog, Career Pivot, is a Forbes Top 1oo Best Career Website, and has achieved several other best career website awards.

    • The world has changed and baby boomers can no longer think that careers are solely local branding worldwide
    • The book provides step by step for social media —  sort of systemic
    • There are three things Marc is tired of hearing from baby boomers on why his or her personal branding efforts lack an online presence
    • Excuse: I’m not a brand. Solution: Present yourself as a brand
    • It sounds like bragging. Although we tell our kids to do it, we still don’t like doing it.
    • Baby boomers must become more comfortable in promoting him or herself.
    • Consider values and talents to show social proof.
    • The messages you send requires authenticity. Not sure? Ask for help from others. People are willing to help.
    • Stop apologizing for asking for help, being out of a job, and for connecting to people from past jobs
    • Linkedin is a must to increase your chances
    • Take good social media pictures — take profile pictures with several different backgrounds
    • Put much thought in your brand story across social platforms
    • Have someone help you create your Linkedin summary as part of your complete brand story

Chandra Lee (@ChandraLee) of LeeIntergrations is my return guest to explain how her company helped a client make a living and thriving as a leadership consultant and thought leader. Here are some of the highlights of our discussion:
If you want demand as an expert in a field, you need to show that you are that expert, and this can be done online
He had worked as a leader of a couple of organizations but had no real training experience or record
Chandra’s team and their client began a blog for him to share original brand of leadership advice
Through consistent posting on Twitter and Instagram, they added pictures as social proof of him living out his advice (critical to his brand). He regularly published  to his blog and over time attraction a lot of traffic
Quotes were added into his social media posts (his own and of famous leaders) and after a length of time he was in demand as a leadership speaker for some huge companies
One of the companies he spoke to was the executive board for Chik-a-Filet
Chandra emphasized how much patience and consistency is important to be seen as an expert
She also stated that potential clients or employers need evidence that you can do what you teach or say

Chandra Lee has loads of hiring nightmares, and she will share a few with me this summer. This episode is intended to help you intentionally build a strong online personal brand despite any past lapses in judgment. One of the easier things you can apply right now is to stop sharing negative stories about your employer, coworkers, or work products.

Chandra Lee (@ChandraLee) is the founder and managing partner of Lee Integrations, LLC. She has worked with many companies, brands, and clients including celebrities. She works to assist others to extend his or her personal brand and relationships worldwide with the goals of enhancing their business and personal networking.

Chandra says that in her business, you have to be an avid user of the product to garner serious consideration

 

    • She regularly screens potential candidates through their social activity to see if their personal brand fits her company’s goals
    • One candidate that we highlight regularly complained about her current employer on Facebook
    • This person went into detail about work situations, bosses and coworkers and continually called them names
    • As Chandra viewed this person comments, she pictured herself being talked about in a couple of months if she hired her
    • As intense as the complaints continued especially around the holidays, the complainant (the now former candidate), posted that her boss gave a $5,000 and an iPad
    •  Employers like Chandra look for fit regardless of the resume quality, accomplishments, and achievements. And also see if they have a strong and respectable personal brand
    • Although she continued to complain throughout her career changes on Facebook, she also continued to experience job search challenges
    • She is constantly committing career suicide primarily due to her derogative comments on social media. She doesn’t understand the full power of social media. He comments have caused her jobs and opportunities despite “high-level” skills
    • Chandra recommends showing your personality, volunteer work, and positive comments and resources to strengthen your brand
