Chandra Lee has loads of hiring nightmares, and she will share a few with me this summer. This episode is intended to help you intentionally build a strong online personal brand despite any past lapses in judgment. One of the easier things you can apply right now is to stop sharing negative stories about your employer, coworkers, or work products.

Chandra Lee (@ChandraLee) is the founder and managing partner of Lee Integrations, LLC. She has worked with many companies, brands, and clients including celebrities. She works to assist others to extend his or her personal brand and relationships worldwide with the goals of enhancing their business and personal networking.

What do you think about negative sharing about your work situation? We’d love for you to share you thoughts.

Here are three ways you can add value to our conversation:

1) Leave a voice mail or text message at 708-365-9822. Let me know if I can share it on future shows

2) Email me: [email protected]
3) Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com and press the “Send Voicemail” button to leave a message online

Those of you who are career professionals can receive the additional bonus by leaving your blog and I will link to it.

Chandra says that in her business, you have to be an avid user of the product to garner serious consideration

    • She regularly screens potential candidates through their social activity to see if their personal brand fits her company’s goals
    • One candidate that we highlight regularly complained about her current employer on Facebook
    • This person went into detail about work situations, bosses and coworkers and continually called them names
    • As Chandra viewed this person comments, she pictured herself being talked about in a couple of months if she hired her
    • As intense as the complaints continued especially around the holidays, the complainant (the now former candidate), posted that her boss gave a $5,000 and an iPad
    •  Employers like Chandra look for fit regardless of the resume quality, accomplishments, and achievements. And also see if they have a strong and respectable personal brand
    • Although she continued to complain throughout her career changes on Facebook, she also continued to experience job search challenges
    • She is constantly committing career suicide primarily due to her derogative comments on social media. She doesn’t understand the full power of social media. He comments have caused her jobs and opportunities despite “high-level” skills
    • Chandra recommends showing your personality, volunteer work, and positive comments and resources to strengthen your brand

-A World Gone Social- with Mark Babbit & (1)

If you have not engaged in the “social” part of social media, you miss opportunities beyond money. Whether you like it or not, small business or large, employed or unemployed, you must compete to survive or thrive.  Large brands, small business, and people in your network are looking for you to add your voice.

A World Gone Social authors, Ted Coiné (@TedCoine) and Mark Babbitt (@MarkSBabbitt) are my guests for this episode. Leave a comment on the blog OR a review of the episode in iTunes about what you liked about the interview, and you can qualify for a FREE copy of their book.

Of courseyou are always invited to leave me feedback about the show. So, here is where you can leave it:

email: [email protected]

Blog: TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com/55

Ted Coiné (@tedcoine) is the co-founder of Switch and Shift, 3-Time CEO, and you may have seen him on top Influencers lists from the Huffington Post and Forbes.

Mark Babbitt is the CEO of You Tern, President of Switch and Shift, and a Forbes and Mashable top website for your Career.

Both are authors of the new book, A World Gone Social: How Companies Must Adapt to Survive. Thanks to AMACOMbooks for the review and giveaway copies. This partnership has been a pleasant three years and counting.

Here are a few of the highlights of our conversation

    • The democratization of our society has afforded for everyone to be involved. The more social, the more we become the media with something to say. We all have the opportunity to be heard.
    • Stop broadcasting and start interacting whether a large brand or job seeker. In the book, brands that “nail it” are highlighted. Companies need to look at who have they talked to on a given.
    • Establish what your value and expertise. Once you build a brand (large or individual), you must have social proof. You must be engaged within your brand. Stop talking and start proving.
    • Social journey meaning learning along the way, with mistakes, and faux pas pass with time. Start building your social presence long before you need it.
    • If we are lacking skills, we can learn and build those skills with online tools. You can master them in a short period of time.
    • It is a “we” centered, but not to be overemphasized. The “me” can’t be lost in personal branding, so your individual accomplishments must be highlighted.

I will be giving away a copy Ted’s and Mark’s book. You can participate in three ways:

  1. Comment on the page of the blog where the audio of this conversation is presented
  2. Leave a review of the show on the iTunes page of what you liked about the conversation on the page
  3. Leave a comment on the YouTube page using your Google plus account about what you liked about our conversation

I will announce the winner on Friday on our Facebook page! Good luck.

The entire interview is almost 30 minutes long, and you can view the YouTube version here.

Mildred Talabi

Today’s job hunting requires being proactive in every way. This means using social media and other tools including video, blogging, and Twitter.  It is one of the ways to stand out, and today’s episode we’ll discuss how important it is to be proactive and get noticed.

Thanks for joining us for a very special edition of this podcast! It’s special because for the first time, there will be a video version of the podcast on YouTube which is now live. There is a slight difference in the editing of the video, but the same conversation. I am always open to suggestions for switching it up. If you have suggestions of any kind, you can contact me in three with ways:

Email: [email protected]

Phone: 708-365-9822

My guest for this episode is Mildred Talabi (@MildredTalabi).  Her latest book is The Science of Successful Job Hunting. She started out as a journalist and eventually, became a career advisor on the side. Her career advice has appeared on a Google forum (you can find this on YouTube), JobMob, and Guardian.

When I first talked to Mildred last May, she was writing a book regarding youth unemployment and the affect joblessness was having on them. Then she shifted and was inspired to write a book for the general job seeker population.

Writing about youth is not a stretch at all. In fact, Mildred works a full-time job in training 16-24 year-old youths career development.

Two things you should know about the episode recording:

1) This was recorded on Labor Day when people were in a festive mood. You will hear a little music in the background.

2) Around 4: 00, Mildred’s audio dramatically improved through the use of headphones. The audio editing reflects.

Here are some highlights from our discussion:

2:35

Mildred explains that she is an accidental  career advisor. Her background is in journalism and as an assistant editor she had to recruit people, and saw people were forward horrible CV’s.  Mildred started her first book (7 Keys to a Winning CV) while professionally working as an editor for The Guardian.

6:48

Mildred expands on the notion that passion is a good start but you can’t live off of it. Skill can be developed and that passion and skill is good.

9:30

We agree that you can pilot your passion, meaning that you can charge minimally with friends and family, and grow from then. Once you can test and get results, then you can charge more. Mildred give some examples from her career to reach that “sweet spot.”

13:11

Mildred and I discuss how job seekers should blog, stand out, and be innovative. It allows employers to Google and find you to leave a positive impression of you.

15:38

Mildred also shares how much she’s learned by blogging and reading. “There is so much available out there as far as knowledge…”

17:56

Mildred agrees that it is an employers’ market in the hiring process to eliminate candidates from the basic level.

Our conversation lasted more than 45 minutes. I decided to publish it in it’s entirety because of the loads of gems she offers. You can download a free sample chapter today of Mildred’s latest book.

By the way…

Hey, don’t forget to sign up on the blog for the e-zine, and by doing so you receive my new e-book, 5 Easy Ways YOU Can Create an Amazing Online Presence. I would love to hear and/or read your feedback about the show.
