8 Job Search Mobile Apps To Get it Done

8 Job Search Mobile Apps To Get it Done

mobile apps

This article was originally published on Recruiter.com!

I’m sure some of you still use your laptops for everything, but for more and more people these days, smartphones are the primary Internet-enabled device. For example, my sons and wife all use their phones constantly and go days without touching a computer! And they’re not alone: Mobile Internet usage is now more common than desktop Internet usage. Some even say laptops will be nonexistent in the next few years!

If you’re the type to rely on their smartphone for everything, then you probably want to use it for your job search, too – if you aren’t already, that is. I won’t say this article is a one-stop shop, but it will definitely help you turn your smartphone into a powerful tool for your mobile job hunt.

Here are eight great tools you may want to check out:

1. The Microsoft Office Mobile App

That’s right: Microsoft Office is now available on your smartphone. If your resumes and cover letters are Word documents, then you can now access and edit them right through your phone.

If you don’t want to do any document editing on your smartphone, you should at least keep the Outlook mobile app. That way, you can have all of your email accounts in one place.

2. The Browser on Your Phone

You’ve probably thought of this already, but it bears repeating – especially for those who are new to the mobile job hunt. Your smartphone has at least one browser installed, and it’s probably just as powerful as your laptop’s browser. Use it to search for jobs, research employers, look at job boards – your phone’s browser can do it all.

3. Video Apps

You may need a couple of video apps for those companies that favor video interviews. Skype is the app of choice for most employers, but Google Hangouts is a close second. That being said, it won’t be long before many employers switch over to Blab.

4. Job Search Apps

Having a few job search apps on your phone can certainly be helpful. I am not going to recommend a specific one here, but I do have a few guidelines to help you choose the best one for your needs:

– Use an app that isn’t likely to hijack your phone’s OS. If you have a phone with 16GB of RAM or less, some apps may make your phone stall out. Even if you have more RAM, some job search apps can still slow down your phone. Choose wisely.

– Choose an app that will send you notifications about new job leads. Remember, the app is not a magic wand: Applying quickly may give you a small advantage, but that does not guarantee anything. Still, it’s good to have an app that will keep you updated, even when you aren’t actively using it.

-Speaking of notifications, make sure your app allows you to easily customize notifications. Notifications can be annoying, so you may need to cut down on some of the noise.

5. Spelling and Grammar Apps

If you find grammar and spelling challenging, the Ginger app ($3.99) is what you want. It replaces your keyboard and provides help if you are sending emails or updating your statuses on social networks. Every interaction counts during a job search, and misspelled words can discourage employers from considering you.

6. Online Education Tools

Podcasts, seminars, and even YouTube videos can help you learn more about your industry and increase your proficiency. That, in turn, will make you a much more attractive candidate.

7. Ditch Your Phone’s Voicemail for YouMail

I love everything about YouMail. The free version is cool, because it will send you mp3 copies of your voicemails that you can check from any device. For only $4.99 a month, though, you can record personalized greetings for each caller. So, if Marcia calls, she’ll hear: “Hi Marcia! Mark is not available right now … ” It’s a powerful way to make a good impression on people.

8. Scanning and Faxing Apps

You have many options if you need to sign and share paperwork via your phone. DocuSign and HelloSign are two apps that should give you all you need when it comes to tracking and completing important paperwork.

–

Your phone is now ready to be the control center of your job search. You now have a home office and mobile office in the palm of your hands – all because you downloaded the right apps. The new job search is mobile, and it’s only going to get even more so in the years to come. Prepare for it now!

Both Hannah and I agree today’s job search is more than obsessively tweaking your resume. The new job search is about disruption and agility.  I have had Hannah Morgan on the show twice, but we talk periodically via email. She was my guest on episode 23 and episode 57.

During a recent email conversation she asked me to be on her Blab show. I gladly accepted her invite to talk about what’s new in job search.

Let me know if you are using some of the new platforms such as Blab, Periscope, or Snapchat. You can let me know in one of three ways:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your thoughts to the same number
  2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
  3. Send email feedback to [email protected]

The New (But not So New) Job Search

Hannah Morgan is the Career Sherpa, a weekly contributor to U.S. News and World Report, and author of two books. Her very popular blog  is mentioned among every top career site list, not to mention one of my favorite career blogs. To me, she is the voice of reason and balance when it comes to sage and useful strategies for those following her advice. I was quite honored to be asked to be on her show, and quite honestly, one of my career highlights since I started in 2008.

Here is some of what Hannah and I discussed:
  • Resumes are not everything, in fact, they’re more the  rudder of a boat or ship
  • Skills gap needs to be closed by more conversations and networking
  • Mobile recruitment and being found through mobile platforms will differentiate you
  • Social networking is more than just updates—websites, LinkedIn blogging
  • Being disruptive and not just using traditional methods
  • Relying on job boards, and even email resumes are noisy and expected
  • Blab, Periscope, and Snapchat are where people’s personalities are, recruiters are looking
  • Interact with employers and recruiters. Create a show on new platforms and interview them about what they want

Need help with your career goals, directions, or efforts? Do you need coaching or instruction? I am here for it!

Also, join our Linkedin community! You’ll enjoy some of the insights shared by community members and other career pros!

I would still like to help self-published career professionals promote their books. If you’re interested, find more info here.

I will not publish a show on the week of July 4. Please enjoy the catalog available in iTunes and many other podcast directories.

Don’t forget the last show for the season is July 26, and the new one will begin on Sept. 6. I will be publishing new articles (up to 3x a week) on the blog. If you’re a career pro and love giving career advice, let me know. I would love to have more guest writers during my hiatus and beyond.

4 Ways to Land on a Recruiter’s Mobile

4 Ways to Land on a Recruiter’s Mobile

android

Editor’s note: This is my guest article originally published on YouTern! Let me know your thoughts!

In today’s marketplace, job seekers must be effective marketers.

Yes, marketers.

That’s what today’s job search is about: marketing your services, expertise and personality effectively enough that you put yourself in a recruiter’s ears, eyes and brain.

And what method are professional marketers using to get their product noticed more than any other?

Through the one thing, no one ever seems to put down anymore: their mobile device.

Marketers predict mobile will soon influence decision-making far more than any other media. So why not use this same approach to get your personal brand in front of a hiring manager? Why not appeal to their eyes and ears – and get much further then your resume can take you?

Sure, you’ll hear from your friends, parents, and career centers to create, recreate and perfect your resume and cover letter. But that is what everyone’s doing; it will not provide you a competitive advantage.

While your competition is tweaking those resumes, crafting those cover letters and filling out a never-ending stream of online job applications – through audio and video you will  be discovered by employers looking for someone exactly like you: innovative, creative and courageous.

Here are four ways to reach recruiters on their mobile device… no resume required.

Click To Tweet

Use Blab or Periscope Video Streaming Apps

Blab and Periscope are two relatively new entries into the video content delivery space – and you and recruiters can use both apps on your phone.

Jessica Miller-Merrell recently shared on her blog two compelling reasons to use these apps:

  1. Many companies use video interviews to initially screen applicants, so Blab and Periscope are now fairly common and trusted technologies
  2. Using Blab and Periscope enables you to hone your video interviewing and digital presentation skills; two highly sought-after soft skills

Most important, you can use these formats to informally, yet informatively, introduce yourself to hiring managers – and they can play your video with one click on their mobile device.

Being a Guest on a Podcast

A guest spot on a podcast is a great way to gain instant credibility for your personal brand.

My colleague, Jim Stroud, suggests in his book, The Number One Job Hunting Book in the World, that job seekers contact a podcaster and offer themselves as an expert or industry insider. There are thousands of podcasters looking for guest experts; many of them don’t require you to have a book or a blog to appear on the show.

Not an industry expert yet? You can talk about your current passions, social causes, and consumer issues.

Click To Tweet

You can offer the Millennial perspective on a variety of hot topics. Or you can talk about a unique program at your school or a volunteering project. The possibilities are endless.

Once the podcast has been released on iTunes and other outlets, send the link to recruiters. They can take a quick listen; identify you as an influencer and offer you an interview – all from their cell phone.

Appear on Your Community’s Radio Station

Most communities, even some of the smallest, have local radio stations that encourage content from local citizens. So why not approach the station with an idea for your own show?

Each station has guidelines for content creation, of course. But either through your solo efforts or by interviewing guest experts, you can display your passion and knowledge. The station can provide an audio file of your segment to share on social media, your website or blog. You can also upload media to your LinkedIn profile.

Again, this personal branding mechanism – in whatever format or platform you choose – is easily digested on a mobile device. For a couple bucks, you can even send the recruiter a set of earbuds with a note that says, “Listen to this…”

Record a Local Presentation for Audio and Video

On your tablet or mobile device, high-quality video is easier than ever to record and distribute. Record a personal introduction, then reach your network and prospective employers by uploading the short video to Facebook and YouTube.

Once uploaded, send your target employers the link to your video. Or catch them off-guard by pinning the video to your social media profiles so when they check you out online (and they will check you out online), there’s your video to help you create a great first impression.

Want to stand out? Want to increase the perceived value of the services and expertise you offer? Then think like a marketer!

In 2016, you must start thinking about how you will market yourself differently than you job seeking competition. And delivery of video and audio to a recruiter or hiring manager’s mobile phone will help you do just that.
