Personal SEO for Your Online Resume

Personal SEO is a way of stating the importance of being found online. This episode will convince you that a Facebook page is not enough for a job search. Having an online resume  portfolio is how employers will find and confirm your value. That is our goal in today’s episode.

Susan P. Joyce (@jobhuntorg) is the perfect person to have this discussion. She is the owner of Job-Hunt.org and WorkCafe.com, Forbes Top 100 websites for your career. She is a former Marine and an MIT visiting scholar. She also a Huffington Post contributor. All of that sounds intimidating right? Well, she is just as down to earth as anyone I’ve met. We talked over the phone for almost an hour and traded numerous emails on a variety of job search subjects. This conversation is more than 45 minutes, and we covered so much. I don’t know if the highlights will do it justice.

Here are the highlights of our discussion:

  • People are still outraged that employers Google them not realizing that your online identity in general is fair game. Job seekers need to think in terms of leading employers and connections to where your best presence resides. Having a consistent profile across all platforms is smart and strategically sound in presenting your online resume
  • Google Plus is still an under-used yet powerful resource with fewer rules than LinkedIn.  It is a great place to manage your online reputation. Commenting on blogs and writing articles are great ways to associate increase visibility. We recommend using Google authorship to make it easier for employers to find you.  You must have a Gmail account and a Google Plus account to set this up
  • Amazon reviews scores high in Google rankings. A job seeker can write a review for industry related books, and be found. This increases value in presenting your online resume
  • We mentioned how people can also refer to the conversations in past shows with Hannah Morgan and Erin Kennedy as we discuss online reputation and the importance of keywords
  • Susan recommended that a person should Google themselves at least once a week to manager his or her reputation. Most people are unfamiliar with Google Verbatim, a tool used for targeted searches and useful to search your reputation
  • Privacy protection should be a long-term concern. Susan stated that there are too many people unaware of consequences of so much personal disclosure
  • We end the show by talking how employers are not posting salaries along with the description, and why she was so passionate about it. This is the original tweet that sparked my inquiry

Sandra Tedford has contributed to this blog frequently. Her most recent contribution was my guest host on episode 24. She is the founder of WeTalkToday.com and writeclik.com. Sandra helps small businesses off the ground, establish an online presence, and produce online marketing content. She is the author of a couple of books including the newly released, LinkedIn Profile Mastery: Learn the Secrets to Get Noticed, Get Hired and Build Your Business Network.

At 3:00

Here are some highlights from this two part discussion:

  • Sandra shares about how she was running into so many business owners how to use the social profiles, and who didn’t have an online presence.
  • Many successful people still do not have an online presence to match their message
  • Business today is about global and working from anywhere, not limited to local. An online presence establishes you and validates your credibility.

At 11:33…

Amanda Abella is a Writer, Motivational Speaker, Career and Business Coach, who authored the book, “Make Money Your Honey.” Her advice was featured in Huffington Post, Chicago Tribune, and Forbes. She is also a friend of Coach Jennie, one of episode 48 guests.  I first saw Amanda on an episode of All Things Career (shout out to @KevinKermes), and I remembering liking the interview. Jennie was so generous in suggesting a guest, so when she mentioned Amanda, I asked if Jennie could introduce us. The rest, as they say is history.

Highlights of our discussion:

  • Lack of financial control skews our career view and limits our choices
  • What does financial freedom mean? It means different things to different people
  • Financial freedom means making the right choices, not necessary sacrifices
  • Out of control debt puts people in a situation where the wrong career is realized after chasing money
  • The view of the debt or someone else’s view can affect your decision, and are affected by not having his or her conviction about finances

At 33:44

Sandra and I resume discussing the importance of having an online presence and potential  components such as, published articles, press, blogs, PowerPoint Presentations on Slide Share, YouTube, and more. In this segment, we discussed:

  • It won’t be feasible to all that we suggested, but test what may be cost-effective to achieve a result ROI (Return on Investment)
  • Your online presence is easier now than ever before especially with YouTube or audio content such as podcasting
  • The world is in the mobile space now so your online presence must reach users in a way that is convenient for potential followers, clients, or employers
  • Google plus is a very viable option to build an online presence because of the tools such as YouTube, Google Hangouts, Google Drive, and your content presence showing in Google results

The voice of job Seekers podcast

With all of the advice on the internet warning everyone that your resume is likely tossed with one typo, employers report there are too many errors of all sorts. Today, Lauren Milligan and offer advice to prepare your resume for perfection (although, we throw in a caveat with this point).

I met Lauren Milligan about five years ago on a career panel. We kept in touch throughout the years and landed here on the show. You can find her career expert advice featured on Time, Yahoo, or CareerBuilder. Back in the day, she was a co-host on a weekly podcast so you will hear how comfortable she is in our conversation. She founded the extremely successful ResuMAYDAY company located here in the Chicago area.

Here are the highlights of our discussion:

  • We stated in the beginning that who helps edit a resume is critical to a quality resume.
  • Common errors are spelling, typos and grammar. Lauren notes inconsistencies in putting periods at the end of bullet points is problematic
  • Lauren stated  have to assume that employers will be strict about grammar on your resume, especially in the smaller details. Stating how you are detailed and then your resume failing to exhibit grammar detail will likely disqualify your candidacy
  • Another anomaly in writing is when job seekers write resume summaries the same way they do bullet points. Lauren recommends full sentences in the summary, which sets up the context for the job, and highlighted fragments in the bullets, but she emphasizes consistency
  • She uses “I,” “Me,” and “My” in the summary part, but NOT in the bullet points. Her clients say that employers comment how well they connect to the candidate
  • Lauren recommends reading your resume backwards is best to focus on each word instead of a stream of words. She emphasizes that she does not trust spellcheckers.
