Welcome back to The Voice of Job Seekers podcast! This is year (or season) number 8! I’ve done 219 episodes of this show and will continue to present the most relevant and modern job search tips for you.

Much has happened over the summer. And I have been doubling down on providing help to job seekers everywhere to turn around their results, answer questions, motivate others. This year’s “Job Lab” has been a great help to those who come with questions. Not only are attendees getting their questions answered, but they’re also drawing a blueprint for themselves as they hear others with similar problems and come away with breakthroughs.

I would love to hear from you.

You are more than welcome to join the discussion. Here are three ways you can:

– Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number

– Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message

– Send email feedback to [email protected]

Those on the mailing list are offered the chance to participate in the Job Lab. If you want to join us on September 26 for the next to last Job Lab, sign up at the blog.

Few minutes with Jack Kelly
Weekly LI Live Show with Jack Kelly
Weekly LI Live with Damian Birkel
Job Club (Next Sept. 26)

I have done several interviews on different podcasts over the summer. You’ll hear some excerpts from those interviews, including ones I did for an NPR podcast and LinkedIn News.

Throughout the fall, you’ll hear guests from my video series you can find on YouTube. Excerpts of stellar job search advice will come from those interviews. We’ll also dig in the virtual crates and dig out relevant and past interviews.

This week, my guest is Jack Kelly, CEO of WeRecruitr.com, and my co-host of our weekly Wednesday Linkedin Live show. If you want to see it live and participate in the chat, find my LinkedIn page, you’ll find the show. Jack is a Forbes senior contributor writing career-related news and job-search advice several times a week.

Here are a few highlights from our conversation:

  • There must be a plan to reinvent. It just doesn’t happen.
  • Starting over is OK—Do over, start all over, and it’s hard to do
  • We connect our identity to our careers.
  • Reinvention or the lack of it affects your surrounding, family, etc.
  • Most will likely pivot more often than generations before them.
  • Jack’s article on positivity on Forbes
  • What’s needed is more empathy and compassion and less hot takes for job seekers.

I am updating my free e-book entitled, “421 Modern Job Search Tips for 2021.” I plan to release it to my email list on October 30, before everyone else will be alerted on November 13. Want it early? Go to the blog to sign up.

The One Reason a Modern Job Search Isn’t Modern

The One Reason a Modern Job Search Isn’t Modern

Your misconceptions of what a recruiter is supposed to do are distracting you from what’s important.

By wondering why an employer doesn’t give you any feedback after interviewing is an uphill climb.

The fact you’ve applied to 150 online jobs this month, and you’re waiting to be chosen isn’t good judgment.

No one is calling to find out if you are available. After all, there are a thousand analogies comparing job search to dating. In principle, it’s true when someone who mutually likes you is pursuing you, too. Why wouldn’t it be the same for a potential employer?

These are myths that come from listening to people who you say, “All you have to do is…” It’s our nature to wait for things to get easier or go back to the way things were.

It never gets easier. Things won’t go back to the way they were.

Technology is changing such industries, careers, life, and jobs and fast now, where industries can change in a year. Think about how shopping has changed. How about the fast-food industry? Wherever there is convenience, or an increase of speedy, technology is involved. How apprised are you of your ideal or **gulp** a dream job and what it takes to get the training, knowledge, and education you need to compete (you realize competing is necessary, right?

It’s not easy changing careers or industries. Heck, it’s not easy finding a job. If you haven’t changed jobs in the last few years, you’ll find things are different. You’ll discover by modernizing your job search will open a few more possibilities:

  1. Please use job boards for information about jobs, trends, skills training, and less in depending on them to apply. You may need to apply before being considered as severe, but you should find someone to refer to, then use. Then again, the more specific in targeting the company you want to work for, connecting with people in that company to answer questions about culture and fit will bring better results.
  2. I love seeing people on Twitter, and LinkedIn sends out job leads. Sometimes, these leads precede an advertisement for the opening. Following group accounts and industry professionals can lead you to those opportunities.
  3. Virtual collaborations with people in your industry provide opportunities to know their strengths. You may be able to leverage their knowledge and help you understand and get what employers want.
  4. Listening to the chatter provides all kinds of meaningful intel, even if it doesn’t involve you. You can also set Google and Talkwalker alerts to help capture news-related events.
  5. Personal attributes matter in every interaction, and it counts. The way you treat others online is an indication to everyone how you will treat them as colleagues. Embracing and learning new technologies and processes must be incorporated into your skill base. Showing your displeasure and unwillingness for them without showing competency is often noticeable.

There are other ways to modernize your job search. I didn’t mention anything about appealing to recruiters in this piece. It will take more effort, and there’s no way to automate results to get the career you’ve wanted. By modernizing your job search, you’ll have more control over how you find jobs and clarify how you will contribute to it. This is also a better way to find out if you want it by making personal connections, hearing the good with the bad, and deciding it may not fit you.

6 Tactics Could Get You Hired in September

6 Tactics Could Get You Hired in September

You can get hired in any economy and any time of the year if you’re willing to put the work in before you need the job. It’s true.

One Monster.com article suggests January-June is when most companies hire the most. However, that is excellent intel for you to strategize if you’re changing jobs or careers for the new year. You’ll need to stand out with other job candidates who are applying, too.

Although I’ve suggested successful job seekers have incorporated job search as a lifestyle, you’ll also need to consider tactics that will inject momentum.

Here are six I recently shared on LinkedIn I also wanted to share here. I think you can make significant progress if you’re stuck and need inspiration and strategy:

👍🏾Take 5-10 of your connections to offline conversations. The transition is a powerful experience in this pandemic.
👍🏾Find out how people are winning. When you see others getting interviews, jobs, and achieving greatness, ask how they are doing it. Imitate what works but in your way. “Experts” don’t have all of the answers.
👍🏾Future-proof your job search by staying engaged even if you started a new job, invest in your professional development.
👍🏾Embrace collaboration. Your competition relies on mentors and peers to share resources, complementing knowledge, and giving advice. If you’re not, how can you be a formidable opponent?
👍🏾Sweat the small stuff. Be expressive, show gratefulness, and be consistent in everything. Remember, most people don’t know you well enough to give you a pass on sarcasm and slight but hurtful remarks.
👍🏾Show personality. People remember others who make them think, laugh, cry, or entertained. The way you tell stories with flair makes you memorable.

I also wanted to include a few vital value-added comments from the same thread. These career professionals recruiters and provided a real-world perspective on what it takes to get hired.

Angela Watts, an executive resume writer, and recruiter stated, “The current job market is evolving quickly and what worked yesterday may not work today. Keeping a pulse on job search success stories can inspire new ways of approaching employers that will set you apart. As a Recruiter, I’m taught to pay attention to every interaction with a candidate. How you engage with others is being analyzed at all stages and can definitely impact your selection or rejection for a role. A pattern of saying thank you, showing humility, pausing to listen and gracious responses can truly influence a hiring decision.”

Tony Restell, a social media expert and CEO of Social-Hire.com, added a couple of suggestions as well,

“I would add to set yourself goals that are stepping stones to getting a job, so that each day you can feel positive about the progress you are making rather than feeling knocked back when there’s a setback in your job search. So you might say you want to connect with 10 new decision-makers in your target companies, or start 5 new conversations with decision-makers, or speak to 1 person you previously worked with who may be able to refer you into someone. These things are in your control – and if done consistently will lead you towards a successful outcome. Hope that helps and good luck everyone!”

Jack Kelly, CEO of WeCruitr.com, also thought you’re well-being needs to be prioritized. Searching for a job during a pandemic is like running a marathon, Tough Mudder obstacle course, and decathlon all at once.” He also added the following as really practical advice to follow:

💪You have to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally and physically.

💪Sleep well, exercise, eat healthily, avoid too much alcohol and drugs.

💪Stay away from toxic people and social media that raises your blood pressure.

🤜🏾This will provide the strength needed to go the distance.

I’ve included the links to each person’s LinkedIn profile and website. Follow them and their advice as all of us need an extra push in our efforts to move forward during these historic times.
