Personal SEO for Your Online Resume

Personal SEO is a way of stating the importance of being found online. This episode will convince you that a Facebook page is not enough for a job search. Having an online resume  portfolio is how employers will find and confirm your value. That is our goal in today’s episode.

Susan P. Joyce (@jobhuntorg) is the perfect person to have this discussion. She is the owner of Job-Hunt.org and WorkCafe.com, Forbes Top 100 websites for your career. She is a former Marine and an MIT visiting scholar. She also a Huffington Post contributor. All of that sounds intimidating right? Well, she is just as down to earth as anyone I’ve met. We talked over the phone for almost an hour and traded numerous emails on a variety of job search subjects. This conversation is more than 45 minutes, and we covered so much. I don’t know if the highlights will do it justice.

Here are the highlights of our discussion:

  • People are still outraged that employers Google them not realizing that your online identity in general is fair game. Job seekers need to think in terms of leading employers and connections to where your best presence resides. Having a consistent profile across all platforms is smart and strategically sound in presenting your online resume
  • Google Plus is still an under-used yet powerful resource with fewer rules than LinkedIn.  It is a great place to manage your online reputation. Commenting on blogs and writing articles are great ways to associate increase visibility. We recommend using Google authorship to make it easier for employers to find you.  You must have a Gmail account and a Google Plus account to set this up
  • Amazon reviews scores high in Google rankings. A job seeker can write a review for industry related books, and be found. This increases value in presenting your online resume
  • We mentioned how people can also refer to the conversations in past shows with Hannah Morgan and Erin Kennedy as we discuss online reputation and the importance of keywords
  • Susan recommended that a person should Google themselves at least once a week to manager his or her reputation. Most people are unfamiliar with Google Verbatim, a tool used for targeted searches and useful to search your reputation
  • Privacy protection should be a long-term concern. Susan stated that there are too many people unaware of consequences of so much personal disclosure
  • We end the show by talking how employers are not posting salaries along with the description, and why she was so passionate about it. This is the original tweet that sparked my inquiry

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment of accounting professionals is significantly lower than the national average across all occupations – at 4.2 percent compared to 6.7. Similarly, accounting jobs are expected to grow 15.7 percent from 2010 to 2020, compared to 14.3 percent across all professions.

Today accounting offers attractive STEM career paths and job stability, and industry trends – such as emerging specializations and technological advancements – are making the field more exciting and dynamic than ever. Mario Perez, accounting professor at DeVry University, and I discussed :

·        Growing and emerging specializations, including environmental/green accounting and forensic accounting
·        The convergence between accounting and technology
·        Accounting for global businesses and the importance of a global perspective
·        Integrated business teams: working with management, thus expanding the accountant traditional role
·        Career changers pursuing accounting and what he/she must offer employers

Mario Perez has worked his entire career in the accounting profession. Professor Perez graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting in 1999. He later completed his Masters of Science in Taxation from Florida International University in 2001. Professor Perez successfully passed all four parts of the CPA exam in 2001 and is certified in the state of Florida.

After graduating with his Bachelor’s Degree from Florida International University, he worked for ExxonMobil as the Senior Accountant responsible for monthly financial reporting for all operations in Bermuda and Jamaica. He worked for ExxonMobil from 1999 to 2004. Since 2004 he has been working as a full-time Professor for DeVry University.

Professor Perez teaches all undergraduate accounting courses at DeVry and most graduate courses at Keller (where he has taught since 2002). He is also the Lead Faculty for the Becker CPA Review in South Florida. He teaches the Financial and Audit sections of the CPA exam and is one of the highest ranked instructors in the nation. He is also responsible for Becker marketing events in South Florida as well as scheduling courses and teaching assignments.

In the second segment of the show, I wanted to replay a recording from a workshop I conducted from April 2013. This is a workshop I offer 5 ways that job seekers can keep their job search relevant and meaningful. I asked my occassional co-hosts and contributors Sandra Tedford and Bianca “Sassy HR Girl” Thompson to offer their thoughts on using social media for their job search. I want you to note the startling difference between Sandra’s and Bianca’s perspective — it is still interesting to hear in 2014.

We addressed the following:

  • The importance of a LinkedIn profile and choosing to complete it in
  • Although many professions do not emphasize the use of social media, you will stand out if you do
  • Put your best foot forward when you do choose to use social media
  • Why people are still apprehensive in using social profiles to market themselves to employers

Hannah Morgan

In this interview, I talked with Hannah Morgan, the founder of CareerSherpa.net where she provides legendary advice on job search, personal branding, and online visibility and reputation management. She also writes about careers for U.S. News and World Report and co-authored the book, “Social Networking for Business Success: How to Turn Your Ideas into Income.”

One of the things that Hannah and I discuss the segment from last week, “Would You Resign This Way?” where the cast I discussed the reputation of the woman resigning via video. Listen to Hannah’s response to how this woman may appear to employers.

Then we discussed the small differences between how an online reputation is viewed in 2014 than it was in 2011, and how much social proof is weighed as a positive attribute. Hannah shares a study that showed 80-90% of employers are “googling candidates.” Listen to her response about how our personal and business reputations have merged.

Hannah shares about some tools to use to fix your reputation if needed such as a tool called Brand Yourself. She also promotes (as I do) in using Linked In as a portfolio where you can post articles, videos, and samples of your work product.

Oh, by the way, there were funny things that were happening with my Internet connection so there might be one part of the conversation I did not edit when I lost Hannah. It may seem that she changes subjects within a sentence, but that was due to me stopping and starting.
