5 Ways to Show Job Interview Mastery to Employers

More than ever, job seekers must be proficient at interviewing. In fact, it’s likely every networking opportunity is an essential job conversation. It may be the interaction to decide your next step, so you want to be interview ready.

 

The interview process is no longer a one and done meeting.  In Lavie Margolin’s latest book, Mastering the Job Interview Process, he states since employers have more applicants than ever. He says companies, “… are maximizing their time by scheduling more interviews online or by phone than they are in person.” It is an “an extra hoop” for job candidates go through, but it is common for professional positions to have a phone interview and a digital assessment before an in-person interview.

 

It doesn’t have to feel like the Spanish Inquisition. Although these are easier to brace yourself for, the process and mentality are outdated. You’ll be tested and often tried, so you’ll need to be prepared.

 

To impress hiring decision makers, doing and knowing enough to get by is what your competition is doing. You must be presentation ready at all times and in different ways.

You don’t have to say it. It shows. You know nothing about the interviewer, the company, or why you want the job. We can all tell. If you want the competitive edge, but want to know how and why to differentiate yourself, I got you! Here are five reasons and strategies to implement:

 

Employers want to see your enthusiasm.

Interviewers throw around words indicating they want someone who is “passionate” about the job. In other words, they want job candidates invested in the work. Sort of like dating where if you’re not affectionate, then your heart is questioned.

 

Solution: Margolin says, “…employers expect the job candidate will do research since the access to research has increased.” You’re not mastering the interview process if you don’t check the company’s website, look at press releases, or know the company’s brand.

 

Employers want to see you add value.

You got the interview because you will add value. Now you’re competing to show you add the most value. It’s another reason to research, but it’s also time to evaluate your natural strengths and skills and how they match that of the employers.

 

Solution: You must clarify your value in particular ways with stories and results. Keep a running list of your accomplishments, transferable skills, and how you add value. The more you add to the list and how it applies to each employer you prepare for, the clearer your explanations to employers.

Employers will test you during the job interview.

Some companies will test you through assessments, others will give you case scenarios for you to walk them through your solutions, and others will ask irreverent questions to see how you’ll respond.

 

Solution:

You must be agile in your thinking to be ready for anything.

Margolin suggests taking notes is necessary in most cases to show your interest in what the employer has to tell and show you’re willing to learn.

Employers won’t see fit without personality during your job interview.

The interviewer will likely use their “gut instinct” rather than metrics to discern if you’re a cultural fit for the organization. If he or she does not feel they know the candidate better, the interviewer will choose someone who is more personable and relatable.

 

Solution: Showing personality is tough for job candidates but as Margolin says the strategy is to “Turn questioning into a conversation. Ask questions during the interviews, not at the end.” I have stated in the past,

Employers want to know that you want the job.

You’re expected to sell yourself somewhat aggressively to show you have the passion for the job and the company. Most people usually undersell themselves even if they promise hard work, diligence, and timeliness.

 

Solution: Margolin uses the analogy of an advertising company using a billboard approach and how in-your-face creativity doesn’t promote you better. Margolin is right in suggesting over-the-top is not effective (although some have had success). Sprint’s subtle approach in saying there’s only a 1% difference between services, but their price is a profound value proposition. It’s your job to make it your own.

 

Margolin also suggests the job candidate is responsible for moving the process forward by asking follow-up questions and sending thank-you notes. Most people think when they leave the last interview is the last contact necessary. Create several points of contact, timeline, and clear expectations of what is next for yourself and the employer. Without clarity, you set yourself up to be ignored or insignificant. Neither is good as you will need to ensure a good impression is all an employer experiences with you.

I don’t think experts think these two jobs (desk or labor) will exist for the long term. It might be time to reframe the question and the discussion at large. For right now, we still talk about white collar vs. blue collar jobs.

The short answer is contingent on training, certifications, and industry experience often determines salary. Traditional labor and desk jobs are paying $100,000+ depending on location. This article features five blue collar jobs paying six figures (5 blue-collar jobs that pay $100,000 a year ).

It would be helpful to know your aspirations and experience to customize an answer for you.

Both types of jobs, desk or labor, require some technology and with robots on the verge of taking over office and labor jobs, makes pursuing either job a futile goal. It requires research, and it’s best to do it before pursuing the career of your choice.

Studies in recent years say 40% (or a little less) will be contractors or freelancers by 2020. (Here’s Why The Freelancer Economy Is On The Rise) It’s possible everyone will spend time at a desk at some point. I would recommend a mind shift to think about the company you want to work for, deep dive into your “why” and then determine the type of job you’re best suited.

You should also look at sites like Salary.com (Salary.com), PayScale (PayScale – Salary Comparison, Salary Survey, Search Wages), and Glassdoor (Glassdoor Job Search | Find the job that fits your life) to study job, location, hazards (if it applies). Depending on where you are in the world, you may need to look by country. The site JobMob (All Together Now To Get Jobs in Israel and Around the World.) has salary surveys and calculators for careers around the world ( Where to Research Job Market Salaries in 2016).

Finally, chasing a career because of money will mean you’ll ignore any learning curves, hazards, or lifestyle considerations. Although I would never recommend chasing the money, under those circumstances, today’s job seeker should consider a career with strings of options or a portfolio career (several mini-careers as multiple streams of income). This way, you aren’t reliant on a single option or income.

Most people have this habit of starting their job search from scratch. I know the job only lasted six months, when will we learn a long tenure at one employer is a rarity.
Let’s get used to incessantly marketing ourselves.

Think of it as a lifestyle rather than a thing to do. Sort of like staying in shape during a sports off-season, you want a seamless transition between opportunities without interruption.
And don’t say it’s out of your control unless you’d rather experiment abandonment first, and everyone hiding because you’re asking for help later.

 So here are signs when it looks too late to start looking:
1. When it’s time to quit
It takes time to create a job search empowered through many sources. Relying on luck and a job board is not enough to sustain an effective job search. Yesterday’s resume for a general job search is far too little to get started.
The proactive approach affords you time and options are plentiful. Do you have personal business cards yet (yes, electronic cards are almost a must, too)? A completed LinkedIn profile? Are you having  great conversations and finding additional industry resources? Have you narrowed down what careers you will pursue? I understand quitting may take a year in your mind, but in someone else’s it may differ.
2. When you’ve realized complacency
If you’ve been reading career articles for a while, you’ve read to start preparing for your next job the first day at the start of the current one. There is little room for procrastination when it comes to weaving career opportunities together. Most industries are moving, shifting, and constantly evolving.
The need to mold your brand best for your industry requires perpetual pivoting.

You will likely  insert your voice to your industry to be noticed.  Simple comments in specialized groups, on popular industry blogs, or LinkedIn groups will create your voice. Consider writing a peer reviewed article or even have your own blog, but in all cases, if you’re constantly doing this, the opportunities may be a little easier to find.
3. When you’re desperate
People are looking for way to turn off unnecessary noise in his or her space and the one set of noise ignored is the desperate person. Most are likely to keep scrolling or not return the call asking for a job in general. Indicating you’re available to offer XYZ value means so much more than I need a job ASAP.
Regular activities towards future employment such as obtaining additional certifications, blogging, networking, training and speaking shows you’re adding value to your industry’s community.

4. All of your friends are making moves but you
All of those invites to special networking events, workshops, and virtual events you ignored, your friends were participants and at times, facilitators. The happy hours, dinners, and introductions you missed or didn’t follow-up on make sense now.
Your friends were nurturing and cultivating those relationships while you passed on them because you were happy at the time. Well, now you’re jealous and it doesn’t jive with you at all. It’s hard when you see friends moving ahead or before you.
It’s worse when they’re not answering your calls or texts when you’ve started to ask how did they do it? Be connected, stay networking, and offer to help now and then. When we’re giving, we’re learning!
