There are many articles you can find about answer the job interview question, “What is your greatest weakness?” There are few that will break it down like we have in this episode. Answering this question could make a difference in how you’re perceived, and whether an employer likes you enough to hire you.

My guest today offers a unique view of how to answer this job interview question. Chris Fields (@new_resource) is the founder of Resume Crusade and Cost of Work. He owns a Masters in Labor Human Resources (MLHR) and writes for several other sites. He has been quoted in Mashable, Oprah.com, and Monster.com.

How have you answered the “greatest weakness” question?

Here are three ways you can add value to our conversation:
1) Leave a voice mail or text message at 708-365-9822. Let me know if I can share it on future shows
2) Email me: [email protected]
3) Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com and press the “Send Voicemail” button to leave a message online

Those of you who are career professionals can receive the additional bonus by leaving your blog and I will link to it.

Here are a few of the highlights of our discussion:

    • Employers desire honesty in the question. A big turn off is stating that you avoid or redirect the question
    • This also helps the interviewer understand where you’re coming from
    • Think about the job interview as a conversation, not what’s at stake. It matters who you are and if they like you
    • The “weakness” question is an opportunity. The interviewer will think, “Can I have a conversation with this person?” “Can I relate to him or her?”
    • By answering the “weakness” question will help your strengths will shine
    • Your career narrative must be simple, make sense, and resonate to impress. Transparent is fine, but too much is messy and a turn-off

Aaja Corinne-The Voice of Job Seekers (5)

Over the years, I have written and spoke about the importance first impressions at job interviews and the opportunities that come through providing a great presentation. Dressing, looking, and becoming the part is a necessity to compete in any job market. That is why I wanted to have Aaja Corrine, an image branding strategist, on the show to explain how important for a job seeker’s image and brand to be complete.

For this episode, Aaja Corinne and I talk about how to impact your audience by the way you dress. Aaja is an image consultant whose client list includes Babyface (yes, the singer/songwriter/producer) and Bianca Golden, America’s Top Model Contestant. Aaja’s media features include WVON in Chicago, JET magazine, and Today’s Chicago Woman Magazine.

What are some of your challenges in dressing for interviews or networking events? Does your wardrobe fit your professional image or personality? I would love your feedback on these questions or anything that you’ve heard on any of our shows in one of the three ways:

1) Leave a voice mail or text message at 708-365-9822. Let me know if I can share it on future shows
2) Email me: [email protected]
3) Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com and press the “Send Voicemail” button to leave a message online

If you are a career coach or professional and would like to contribute advice or voice your opinion, leave a message along with your name and website. I will include both on the show and show notes on the blog.

Here are some of the highlights of what Aaja and I discussed:

1. Aaja coaches people to shape his or her brand perception through presentation – it affects your movement through the marketplace.

2. She helps people to brand through “signature” not “trends.” She works to understand the person’s job, everyday role, and company culture. She strives to get more information about the person’s personality and what makes them comfortable. Aaja says, “You should always wear the clothes – the clothes should never wear you.”

3. Aaja explains how a negative or a positive image affects your brand from her point of view. She says that your overall package should be as good as the professional substance. When you come to the table, and you don’t look prepared, people start to make assumptions about your capabilities, preparedness and credibility.

4.Your resume is no longer the sole factor in being hired, so you must look like a “brand ambassador” for the prospective company. She asks her clients,”What are your three words that you want to be perceived as?”

5. Aaja says that being adaptable is important to your image and brand. She suggests that you should take your cues from management to emulate their attire on regular workdays and casual days. It’s better to be a tad over-dressed than under-dressed.

6. Professional does not mean boring. You should have “staple” pieces and “statement” pieces. Listen as Aaja offer suggestions for her “power pieces.” There is a part where she says she can find a way to wear a white shirt with pajamas and make it look stylish!

Lavie Margolin wrote a book that contains an exhaustive 500 questions you could be asked during an job interview. Stan Washington’s extensive small business experience and training could teach you how to get started on that small business you’ve been thinking about.

Stan is the founder of honorservicesinc.com, and a former executive with McDonalds in charge of technology of more 14,000 stores. He is now helping small business owners with their technology needs. His company, Honor Services Offices is a  suite of applications with the help of small business owners and some of the brightest technologists in the country. He is a certified coach and resume writer but expanded to small business consulting, so he is familiar with the struggle of job seeker and has helped many of them with their job search preparation.

Highlights of our conversation:

  • Stan worked with small business owners to help grow their business into the million through McDonalds through technology, so his experience transferred directly to his consulting business
  • Stan stated that like small business owners, job seekers need to develop targets and grow their leads or business daily
  • Ideas have to translate into money and the best way to start is small and experiment, then turn it into a product in a methodical way
  • Solving a problem should be a small and simple at first, helps shed a lot of the fears that beginners have
  • Business plans fail because they are so conceptual and don’t have a grasp on the market or competitors

Lavie Margolin  (@laviemarg) is the founder of LionCubJobSearch.com, and author of Winning Answers to 500 Interview Questions helps build framework that leads the reader to customize their answers to win employers over. For the last 10 years, Lavie has been in the Career Management game helping thousands land on their feet with new opportunities. His advice has been featured in the New York Times, CNN.com, and the Wall Street Journal. His other works such as, The LinkedIn Butterfly Effect, and Lion Cub Job Search: Practical Job Search Assistance for Practical Job Seekers are reliable tools to help anyone to gain traction on still a very complex job search. Welcome to the show Lavie Margolin.

Here are the highlights of our discussion:

  • Although job seekers are willing to work hard to get their education, apply for jobs yet have an unfounded confidence that he or she can wing it
  • Every step of the interview process is designed for one person to win so that you have to be the best
  • Lavie mentioned that it was Jacob Share’s article on interview questions (by the way, Jacob was on episode 34) that inspired his book
  • The interview is not about you, it is to learn about the future of your performance, and how it meets the needs of the company
  • Think, “What could I bring from my background that will leave a memorable impression of the mind of an employer?”
  • I asked Lavie to define “flow.” Listen to his answer and his definition as it’s not what I thought he would say, but it made perfect sense.
