Here is a summary of our discussion:

  • What connects the job seeker and hiring manager is “value.” The job is done once it is certain that the job candidate can fulfill the needs of the hiring manager
  • One of the challenges of hiring managers is positive prejudices — the comparison to the last person who held the position is often unfair, but human
  • The vision of the desired candidate can cloud the attributes of a qualified and stellar candidate and muddy tracking down job opportunities. It is a frequent faux pas in career management
  • Demonstrate expertise towards the hiring managers needs not your past experiences as part of sound job search strategy
  • Donn calls poor cover letters have an “obituary” format
  • Donn describes  “value-ocity quotient” and its importance to strengthening your value and brings you closer to the desired position
  • The successful job candidate communicates their brand will raise his or her “valueocity quotient” and increases their influence, impact, and income
  • Donn recommends keeping a project log to keep an accomplishment record –an important facet of career management strategy
  • Donn talks about the “Trojan horse” technique — in the book maps out a job search strategy to implement and promote their brand post-interview
  • Don’t stop pursuing the job after the interview has ended. Donn talks about the success strategies his clients use to stay “top of mind”

It’s hard to be found or relevant if your personal branding is not online showing your capabilities, accomplishments, and achievements. Baby boomers are still evaluating the benefits of the how and why of having an online presence. Marc Miller (@CareerPivot), founder of the blog Career Pivot makes it clear: it is necessary to stamp your personal brand on the internet. The excuses are over. If you are looking for work or looking to transition another opportunity, a meaningful personal brand is a must.

Baby boomers, what online presence do you have and why?  I would love to hear your thoughts in one of the several ways:

1) Leave a voice mail or text message at 708-365-9822. Let me know if I can share it on future shows

2) Email me: [email protected]

Let me tell you about Marc Miller. He is the author of his new ebook, Personal Branding for Baby Boomers, just released less than a week ago. His media features include CBS Money Watch, U.S. News and World Report, and Forbes.  His blog, Career Pivot, is a Forbes Top 1oo Best Career Website, and has achieved several other best career website awards.

    • The world has changed and baby boomers can no longer think that careers are solely local branding worldwide
    • The book provides step by step for social media —  sort of systemic
    • There are three things Marc is tired of hearing from baby boomers on why his or her personal branding efforts lack an online presence
    • Excuse: I’m not a brand. Solution: Present yourself as a brand
    • It sounds like bragging. Although we tell our kids to do it, we still don’t like doing it.
    • Baby boomers must become more comfortable in promoting him or herself.
    • Consider values and talents to show social proof.
    • The messages you send requires authenticity. Not sure? Ask for help from others. People are willing to help.
    • Stop apologizing for asking for help, being out of a job, and for connecting to people from past jobs
    • Linkedin is a must to increase your chances
    • Take good social media pictures — take profile pictures with several different backgrounds
    • Put much thought in your brand story across social platforms
    • Have someone help you create your Linkedin summary as part of your complete brand story

Job Seekers and Conversations About Diversity Issues in the Workplace

Job Seekers and Conversations About Diversity Issues in the Workplace

Janine Truitt (@czarinaorhr) and Steve Levy (also my guest from episode 36) wrote an article calling for company HR departments to initiate and entertain race relations discussions internally. This article was picked up by College Recruiters, who decided to host the webinar, “ Honest Diversity Conversations: Race Relations & HR.”  Janine Truitt and I discuss the webinar and its importance for today’s job seekers. The conversation about diversity issues in the workplace is needed.

The free webinar will be aired Sept. 9, 16, and 23. I recommend for you to registered for it today. I feel that this is a must for job seekers everywhere (particularly in the U.S.) to help you choose future employers.

How important is having a conversation about diversity and inclusion in the workplace to you? Why? I would love to hear from you about this discussion. Here are a few ways to make your opinion known:

1) Leave a voice mail or text message at 708-365-9822. Let me know if I can share it on future shows

2) Email me: [email protected]

3) Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com and press the “Send Voicemail” button to leave a message online

Those of you who are career professionals can receive the additional bonus by leaving your blog, and I will link to it.

Janine is the founder of the talent management consulting firm Talent Think Innovations and the creator of the blog The Aristocracy of HR. Her advice and perspective were featured in CareerBuilder, Black Enterprise, and the Chicago Tribune.

Here is a summary of our conversation:

  • It’s getting harder to have diversity and inclusion conversations although everyone has an opinion; no one wants to talk about it
  • Certain social events cause inflammatory discussions and for HR pros, it’s a still touchy
  • Janine and Steve have written blog posts considered incendiary as intended to bring about more discussion
  • The webinar will contain some action steps for people to move forward with
  • We’re in an age of “social responsibility” so job seekers should expect the most out of an employer
  • It’s not something even considered more than 10 years ago
  • Janine state that HR professionals who participate in the webinar will wonder if the suggestions made will cause HR  “missteps.” Janine says this is the human thing to do, not so much the politically correct strategy
  • Organizations as whole tend to “overstep” in the shadows of controversy, e.g., the Sept. 11 attacks from 2011
  • Janine shares how job seekers can see if a company cares about diversity and inclusion
  • People not of color who have relatives, friends, spouses, or children of different ethnicities are now considering the diversity of a company
