I want to share another great conversation with Mark Babbitt, CEO of YouTern about job search trends and the changes to YouTern coming this month.

Mark’s insight is consistently part of the larger conversation in the career spectrum, if anything, he has his hands on the pulse of what makes employers tick. Social proof and personal branding is at the center of attracting the eyes of employers. This conversation is essential in providing clarity in where you need to start or pivot.

Let me know how your personal branding and social proof is being shaped? Here’s how:

    1. Call and leave a voicemail or text me at 708-365-9822
    2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
    3. Send email feedback to [email protected]

Personal Branding, Social Proof, and YouTern

Mark is the CEO of YouTern, President of Switch and Shift, and co-author of A World Gone Social. This is our third recorded conversation and it’s always a template to further understand how to stand out to employers and recruiters.

    • Expectations are much higher to perform as entry-level training is much shorter. Performance ready is emphasized on “day one”
    • Companies are waiting to find the right candidate instead of the hiring the next candidate if not right
    • Personal selling is important coupled with social proof i.e. LinkedIn recommendations. Employers are limiting “buyer’s remorse” to not hiring the right candidate
    • Googling is now the norm and critical in the hiring process
    • We talk about the shrinking of the unemployed to the mass amount of underemployed
    • People are smarter applying good strategies to target companies, getting referrals, getting recommendations
    • More competition in the workforce, still hundreds of applications per position
    • No interviews after a month of applying – branding issue, likely lack quality social proof, in any
    • To compete, social proof sets you apart, employers likely to interview the person with proof
    • The “human touch” should be frequent during your job search. If you receive no responses, you have a major branding problem
    • Searches for you should say, “read my profile, consider my social proof”
    • Value needs to address what you’re good at and who will pay for it
    • We talk about the shift in content and the update on YouTern.com
    • The site will address lifestyle issues, Gen Z and Millenials, how to identify good companies and more
    • Getting back to the entrepreneur spirit, freelance gigs, solo-preneurship will be posted
    • Relaunch will take place in April
    • We talk about the role of “failure” in our approach to careers and the importance of getting through it quickly. Learn from people who have done it
    • Resilience is still an impressive attribute to employers
    • Intern Pro is still active on Mondays, 9 pm EST, the second longest Twitter chat
    • YouTern will also publish more video and audio content
    • Self-awareness, how are you positioning your value proposition will help you stand out

Your first impression could result in your only chance to further your career. Aaja Corinne (@aajacorinne) and I discuss not only how you can impress in the winter, but also how your actions may impact your career. Your fashion faux pas could impede your personal branding efforts if you’re reckless.

What are a few of the goals you’re trying to achieve in your career. Can we talk? Here’s how you can participate in the discussion:

    1. Call and leave a voicemail or text me at 708-365-9822
    2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
    3. Send email feedback to [email protected]

Winter Fashion to Enhance Your Personal Brand (1)

Let me re-introduce Aaja Corinne. Aaja has appeared in JET magazine, N’DIGO,  WVON 1390, and is a new contributor to Ebony Magazine as well as consulting with a few well-known clients such as Babyface. You can find her site at AajaCorinneTheBrand.com!

  • Wintertime is a great time to make impressive bold statements with the way he or she dresses
  • Winter coats are a great way to express your personality
  • Retailers are having coat sales now so you don’t have to spend lots of money
  • Tailored coats with buttons and belts are good. Don’t wear casual coats to interviews
  • Don’t lay your coat anywhere. The fabric can determine how often it needs to be cleaned
  • Clean your coat monthly especially when the color may warrant. Lint balls are not impressive
  • Shoes are very noticeable especially when the shoes are affected by the weather. Men should watch tucking their pants in the boot. Pants may end up wrinkled
  • How you handle clothes has a positive or negative impact. Your personal branding is impacted by everything you do. Your image needs to be aligned with your online presence and communication style
  • Nothing is more of a turn-off to a connection if your online and off-line are negatively contrasted. The impression is powerful when both are consistent, positive and exceeds the other person’s expectation. This could impact your personal branding for the future.
  • We are branded by association and a negative appearance could defer your chances of furthering your career
  • New job seekers/entrepreneurs become easily flattered by the newness of being impressive they take on all opportunities instead of filtering to consider the best opportunities. Aaja says, “…every opportunity is not a good opportunity.”

It’s hard to be found or relevant if your personal branding is not online showing your capabilities, accomplishments, and achievements. Baby boomers are still evaluating the benefits of the how and why of having an online presence. Marc Miller (@CareerPivot), founder of the blog Career Pivot makes it clear: it is necessary to stamp your personal brand on the internet. The excuses are over. If you are looking for work or looking to transition another opportunity, a meaningful personal brand is a must.

Baby boomers, what online presence do you have and why?  I would love to hear your thoughts in one of the several ways:

1) Leave a voice mail or text message at 708-365-9822. Let me know if I can share it on future shows

2) Email me: [email protected]

3) Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com and press the “Send Voicemail” button to leave a message online

Those of you who are career professionals can receive the additional bonus by leaving your blog, and I will link to it.

I am also promoting some work of my colleagues who giving away some of their useful ebooks. Find out what Michelle Lederman and Patrick Mellody want you to know about their self-published work.

Let me tell you about Marc Miller. He is the author of his new ebook, Personal Branding for Baby Boomers, just released less than a week ago. His media features include CBS Money Watch, U.S. News and World Report, and Forbes.  His blog, Career Pivot, is a Forbes Top 1oo Best Career Website, and has achieved several other best career website awards.

    • The world has changed and baby boomers can no longer think that careers are solely local branding worldwide
    • The book provides step by step for social media —  sort of systemic
    • There are three things Marc is tired of hearing from baby boomers on why his or her personal branding efforts lack an online presence
    • Excuse: I’m not a brand. Solution: Present yourself as a brand
    • It sounds like bragging. Although we tell our kids to do it, we still don’t like doing it.
    • Baby boomers must become more comfortable in promoting him or herself.
    • Consider values and talents to show social proof.
    • The messages you send requires authenticity. Not sure? Ask for help from others. People are willing to help.
    • Stop apologizing for asking for help, being out of a job, and for connecting to people from past jobs
    • Linkedin is a must to increase your chances
    • Take good social media pictures — take profile pictures with several different backgrounds
    • Put much thought in your brand story across social platforms
    • Have someone help you create your Linkedin summary as part of your complete brand story
