Job Search News – January 26, 2018

This is your job search news – THE FUN EDITION –– with articles and resources centered around learning so enjoy! I’ve read them, and you can feel free to comment on them in any form you’d like. Leave a message on the “send voicemail” button on your right. I’ll try to keep it short, fresh, and informative. If you have some news I need to know about, tweet me @MarkADyson!

You know somebody’s job search is depicted here

Her moves are unaffected, but obviously the show must go on. If we don’t see ourselves here we know someone who is going through with despite the emotional pain. You can almost lip sync what fits this girls angst:

“I’ve tried everything 😭😭😭😭😭😭but no one will hire me. And I’ve applied online to 100 jobs but no one has called me back!!!”

OR

“I called the company who said they received my application. No one has called me back. It’s been a month now!😭😭😭😭

OR

“I’ve had three interviews and have not heard back. They don’t like me! 😭😭😭😭

You can add your own words here but it doesn’t have to be like this at all. Start finding out how you can take control of your job search:

If you haven’t downloaded my FREE eguide, “118 Job Search Tips for the Modern Job Search in 2018”  here.

Job lead from JustCats.ie:

“Are you a crazy cat person and loves cats?
Does cattitude come naturally to you?
Have you counted kittens before you go asleep?
Do you feed the stray cats in your locality?
Does petting cats make you feel warm and fuzzy?
If you answer yes to some or all of these questions, how about working with cats as a full time job at Just Cats Veterinary Clinic?”

Yes, this is a real job lead. You wouldn’t find this on a regular job board. I found this through WGN Channel 9 in Chicago. If you want to increase your possibilities by a little bit, consider using Google Alerts or Talkwalker.com.

You can use either for specific search terms to find on the web. In most cases, neither will find every single term each time it’s used, but they will give you a leg up on non-board positions. It depends on how you search. Use this article to help you with Google Alerts type of searches.

Being fired vs. Being laid off

Some people are chuckling right now but there are some differences that are important to know your accessible benefits. Mostly, there is a difference in the employee’s performance. Being fired has everything to do with performance, and laid off has nothing to do with the employee’s performance. If the company offers a severance package, and you’re fired, likely you’re disqualified from receiving anything. Read here for more information!

Here are some more resources:

Latest podcast episode: LAYOFFS?

This may happen to you. I think everyone could benefit from this episode with Tom Spiggle. He is an attorney who enlightened us this week about severance packages and what to do you anticipate this happening to you. Don’t be too passive! You want to have your ducks in a row if/when this happens.

What’s hot in job search?

If you’re trying to attract the eyes of employers and/or recruiters, or even more people on LinkedIn, you need to read this article on Inc. magazine by Suzanne Lucas (@EvilHRLady). She shares an anecdote to how to get more eyes on your LinkedIn updates (not articles but can be applied through your updates).

Why is it hot? Since you’re trying to meet the right people, you need to meet more people and yes, impress those who can refer or guide you.

I gave it a shot and sure enough, I got more than 7,000 views on one update. That’s more views I ever received.
Read the article here. Let me know your thoughts.

Come back next Friday for more job search news that’s relevant to conducting today’s modern job search.

Are diversity and inclusion achievable?

This past week on the podcast this week about the relevance of diversity and inclusion initiatives. Although there are successes documented, many, if not most, balk at the value. In 2018, I will explore this even more, but not without some shading of practices where job seekers catch the short end. This article gives all of the right reasons, but unless if it is not championed from the top down, will fail.

Include the disabled and differently abled in this diversity and inclusion talk

Small and big ways to help the disabled always win. Now, can we possibly get more of them hired for jobs they qualify and competently perform? When we make it hard for them, we disable our full potential to truly have a diverse workplace. Love this article offering ways we can all participate.

Yeah, we tackled it…

I have tackled diversity and inclusion a few times throughout the years. If you want to explore the subject a little more, see the posts listed below:

What’s hot for diversity and the holidays? 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

We may not agree with one another’s choice of holiday celebrations, but we can appreciate one another whether they observe Christmas or not. I thought this article is stated well in making our neighborhood and workplace environment safe and inclusive in every way possible.

Enjoy the holiday, and remember to stay in demand, my friends. See you in 2018!
