Doug Perry, Dental Hygienist Career

Through any profession understanding, your audience is essential to market yourself in a way that keeps you in the mind of employers. Doug Perry’s wife is a dental hygienist who had a hard time marketing herself. Since marketing and communication is what Doug does, he helped his wife and many other dental hygienists find opportunities. Through his research, he found most dental hygienists do not know how to market themselves. Hopefully, through our conversation, you will implement some of Doug’s successful strategies and thinking. Understand this: Conventional and traditional does not catch the eyes and ears of most employers.

Or, as I would say, employers will not hear you.

Which of Doug’s strategies will you try? Have you tried any of these strategies before? Did they work? Why do you think they didn’t work? Ask yourself these questions during this conversation.

I would love to hear about your experiences in one of three ways:

Doug Perry (@GetHiredRDH) is the founder of GetHiredRDH.com and author of Landing a Great Dental Hygiene Job. He is a Dental Hygienist Career Coach, who serves that community through coaching and resume writing services (and other media). He gets his client’s name out in front of hundreds of potential clients through marketing strategies that keep their names in front of employers. You should know that Doug’s day job is a Communications Director of the state Association. Anyone could apply the strategies Doug uses.
Here are some highlights from our conversation:

  • Doug started his career coaching venture because his wife had a difficult time finding a job as a dental hygienist. He noticed that most dental hygienists don’t know how to market themselves.
  • Doug’s background in marketing and communications is useful in helping his clients standout. Dental hygienist are not trained in those areas so most of them don’t know what to do
  • The crux of marketing for dental hygienists is the soft skills in treating patients, rapport with staff, and understanding and communicating with the dentist. It is something that is learned over time as you earn trust
  • Doug said that one of the challenges in marketing is getting his clients away  from the “…this is the way it has always done.” When you Google “dental hygienist resume,” it is likely you get a boring resume that doesn’t stand out. It looks more like anyone else’s resume
  • Doug’s stated that you had to look at the cosmetic side: Different font sizes, adding color, format, and even adding a picture. It is challenging to get hygienist to focus more on accomplishments and results
  • He understood that it was not widely accepted to add a picture on a resume. He suggests and implements as people feel comfortable doing it. The picture helps the candidate stand out and elicit trust–a critical attribute with dental clientele
  • Doug wrote a book based on strategies that helped his wife find a job so fast. One of the strategies he shared was sending a postcard. What tends to happen with postcards–people saved them until they needed someone in a pinch. They also created a dedicated website and video resume produced by his son

You don’t want  to miss next week’s “Veteran’s Day” special episode. I will be publishing that show first thing Tuesday morning, November 11. If you have friends or relatives who served our country, all of who served valiantly and job searching, please plan to recommend and share next Tuesday’s episode.

Today’s job hunting requires being proactive in every way. This means using social media and other tools including video, blogging, and Twitter.  It is one of the ways to stand out, and today’s episode we’ll discuss how important it is to be proactive and get noticed.

Thanks for joining us for a very special edition of this podcast! It’s special because for the first time, there will be a video version of the podcast on YouTube which is now live. There is a slight difference in the editing of the video, but the same conversation. I am always open to suggestions for switching it up. If you have suggestions of any kind, you can contact me in three with ways:

My guest for this episode is Mildred Talabi (@MildredTalabi).  Her latest book is The Science of Successful Job Hunting. She started out as a journalist and eventually, became a career advisor on the side. Her career advice has appeared on a Google forum (you can find this on YouTube), JobMob, and Guardian.

When I first talked to Mildred last May, she was writing a book regarding youth unemployment and the affect joblessness was having on them. Then she shifted and was inspired to write a book for the general job seeker population.

Writing about youth is not a stretch at all. In fact, Mildred works a full-time job in training 16-24 year-old youths career development.

Two things you should know about the episode recording:

1) This was recorded on Labor Day when people were in a festive mood. You will hear a little music in the background.

2) Around 4: 00, Mildred’s audio dramatically improved through the use of headphones. The audio editing reflects.

Here are some highlights from our discussion:

2:35

Mildred explains that she is an accidental  career advisor. Her background is in journalism and as an assistant editor she had to recruit people, and saw people were forward horrible CV’s.  Mildred started her first book (7 Keys to a Winning CV) while professionally working as an editor for The Guardian.

6:48

Mildred expands on the notion that passion is a good start but you can’t live off of it. Skill can be developed and that passion and skill is good.

9:30

We agree that you can pilot your passion, meaning that you can charge minimally with friends and family, and grow from then. Once you can test and get results, then you can charge more. Mildred give some examples from her career to reach that “sweet spot.”

13:11

Mildred and I discuss how job seekers should blog, stand out, and be innovative. It allows employers to Google and find you to leave a positive impression of you.

15:38

Mildred also shares how much she’s learned by blogging and reading. “There is so much available out there as far as knowledge…”

17:56

Mildred agrees that it is an employers’ market in the hiring process to eliminate candidates from the basic level.

Our conversation lasted more than 45 minutes. I decided to publish it in it’s entirety because of the loads of gems she offers. You can download a free sample chapter today of Mildred’s latest book.

By the way…

Hey, don’t forget to sign up on the blog for the e-zine, and by doing so you receive my new e-book, 5 Easy Ways YOU Can Create an Amazing Online Presence. I would love to hear and/or read your feedback about the show.

DeVry University’s Career Advisory Board along with MBO partners produced a survey this month entitled, “The Successful Independent Contractor: A Workforce Trend for the Future.”  This survey revealed the attributes of successful the independent contractor worker. By 2020, it is projected that one of two professionals will be either full or part-time contract workers (also known as 1099 employees).

The intent of the survey was published to capture traits of successful professionals who thrive as 1099 workers. What does it take to work as an independent contractor employee? Alexandra Levit and I discuss how to on the show.

Alexandra Levit (@alevit) is one of my favorite career and workplace experts. She is an author, speaker, consultant, and a frequently quoted in all major publications and career websites. Money magazine recognized her as, “Career Expert of the Year,” Northwestern University “Emerging Leader of the Year,” and she is a Career and Workplace Consultant to the Obama Administration.

Here are some of the highlights from our discussion:

  • Reasons Baby Boomers are great candidates as an independent contractor and in most cases a win-win for the candidate and employer
  • Traits such as communication, strong reputation, flexibility, and organizational skills emphasized as the other studies have, and are critical attributes to stand out
  • Baby Boomers are looking past the age of 65 and looking at opportunities will take them past retirement
  • The study suggests that the job success rate will rise because a fit will be a negotiation of what works for both parties. We delve into the importance of learning the art of negotiation
  • Suggestions on how Baby Boomer job seekers can start to take control of their search, in a way, that makes him or her an attractive contracting candidate
  • The importance of a strong off-line network, and taking on-line relationships off-line for assurance
