Here are some highlights from our discussion:

  • We’re learning now After years of taking the first job that came along how important it is to feel fulfilled from our work and to feel like our work matters.
  • Culture has become important, happiness is becoming more important when they’re being compensated well.
  • “Fit” isn’t the important thing – companies should “hire to shake things up a little bit – feel apart of the culture, but help improve the culture.”
  • Shouldn’t companies hire for three to five years from now – hire for the culture you want in the future.
  • Have conversations with the manager before you sign on (78% leave the company because of their manager). Research the job seeker does go way beyond the about page. Is there an alignment of company values?
  • Verify what the company says about themselves by asking the interviewer, “What is it really like here? What is keeping you here?” Look for radical candor from the interviewer. If you don’t get real answers, perhaps it’s not the right fit for you.
  • Don’t ever assume you won’t find the right fit.
  • What is “workplace intelligence” and what job seekers can do to leverage it. Here are the seven:

The Beyonce Syndrome. Our definition of the show is about the career woman who has it all and does it all. Many feel it’s not enough to achieve the recognition for women to gain the same opportunities as men. Janine Truitt and Chris Fields are back on the show to discuss why it affects people of color much more. Much of what we talk about is unconscious bias, although it was accidental.

Let me share a little about each of my co-hosts:

Janine Truitt is the founder of her company, Talent Think Innovations, LLC is a multi-disciplinary business strategy and management consulting firm. She has been in HR and talent acquisitions for more than ten years. Her media features include Black Enterprise, Entrepreneur Magazine, and US News and Careers.

Chris Fields is the founder of the Resume Crusade, and also an HR professional and resume writer. He helps around 150 people yearly with resume and job search advice. His career advice was in O Magazine, Mashable, and Monster Working!

Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Women: Is it possible to have it all? Want it all?
  • Having it all doesn’t mean all at one time. Everyone defines what “all” means differently
  • We talked about how more work is not recognized by women (even more women of color) with the same respect
  • Janine noted how assertiveness and aggressiveness has negative connotations coming from people of color
  • Chris shared how standards are different for black men and white men in their use of language

My guest, Aimee Bernstein is the President of Open Mind Adventures and coaches, consults, and trains senior leaders and teams within creative and high-pressure environments. Her past clients include Dolce & Gabbana and other large entities. Here are some highlights from our discussion:

    • The level of stress has gone up incrementally–everyone is under pressure these days. The internet has made us accessible 24/7 through mobile devices, and we feel that we always have to be doing something
    • It’s part of Work-Life these days where you are expected to have all of the right answers, have them in a way that is calm and collected, and to be able to do everything
    • It’s best to create boundaries for yourself, but it is not a popular philosophy in business.
    • To shift stress, businesses need to shift their culture, but until they do, people need to know how to shift their pressure
    • With many terms to throw around, press and stress are the new good stress and bad stress
    • Pressure is defined as strength and energy depending how you related to it. It is the energy of change
    • If you are open to the energy of change, you will experience liveliness and high performance.
    • Pressure is a helper and a bit of intelligence to expand your capacity
    • To do well at job interviews you have to be as big as the job–How cool can you stay under pressure?
    • Aimee differs from the notion that we need to handle stress. We need to handle the pressure and AVOID stress.
    • Most people live in their cognitive minds
    • Look at the clues –How are we when by ourselves?
