I thought that people would benefit if I had Audrey Prenzel back on the show to talk about her approach to resume writing for her Canadian Armed Forces to Civilian clients. This show complements next week’s annual Veteran’s day show. Be sure that you have subscribed so you can hear that special edition.

Are you in the military looking for civilian careers? If so, let me know in one of three ways:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822
  2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
  3. Send email feedback to mark@thevoiceofjobseekers.com

If you are a career professional who advise job seekers and adds feedback whether it’s advice or a differing opinion, I will include a link in future show notes and read your comments on an upcoming show. Just let me know if it’s OK with you.

Audrey Prenzel of resumeresources.ca (@AudreyPrenzel) is a career transition strategist and an award-winning resume writer who specializes in writing and coaching for those in the Canadian Armed Forces. She has been published in multiple magazine, newspapers, and career publications.

      • Canada is unique for it has a melting pot population, so language is a major consideration. Many Canadian armed forces members speak French and English fluently
      • Military bases in Canada are primarily French-speaking. Audrey coaches her military clients to showcase their bilingual abilities (some speak more than two) to civilian employers
      • Audrey also coaches them to have a dedication language section as they would on a LinkedIn profile
      • Interestingly enough, most resumes are written in English unless the province is predominantly or solely French
      • The summary is a key spot on a Canadian armed forces to civilian resume, but provide a dedicated title for what you what to be known as e.g., “IT Bilingual Executive.” Your summary will support your description
      • Audrey says that infusing personality in your summary is a great way to stand out. Hard skills and soft skills are important to include
      • Audrey recommends side step cheesy-overused-clichés such as “results-oriented” or “team-player
      • Your resume should answer many questions so the reader will have a good sense of who the applicant is
      • A sense of entitlement will keep you from selling your accomplishments. No one will hire on reputation alone
      • Reverse chronological is the preferred style by employers highlighting what the applicant did and how well they did it
      • One of the challenges in helping Canadian armed forces to Civilian Transition is translating the acronyms. Audrey has a file with more than 10,000 acronyms
      • “Tell me what you want to do” is important to target opportunities. Too much information is good to start
Have you subscribed to this show on iTunes? If you haven’t, please do so. iTunes is a great place to write an honest review and increase the show’s visibility. Enjoy listening to the show.

How to Use Blab or Periscope for Your Job Search

How to Use Blab or Periscope for Your Job Search

Just don’t think of Blab or Periscope only as a means of entertainment or to watch someone else use it to sell you stuff. Become an active participant to embellish your brand or as a strategic part of your job search. Jessica Miller-Merrell suggests that job seekers use it to connect with employers, share about your day, and even for informational interviews.

Have you started using Blab or Periscope yet? Would you use it to connect with employers? I would love to know what you think. As always, there are several ways to share your thoughts on the question or this show’s interview:

1) Leave a voice mail or text message at 708-365-9822. Let me know if I can share it on future shows

2) Email me: mark@thevoiceofjobseekers.com
3) Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com and press the “Send Voicemail” button to leave a message online

Those of you who are career professionals can receive the additional bonus by leaving your blog on the message, and I will link to it.

Let me share a little bit about Jessica Miller-Merrell (@jmillermerrell). She is the founder of the Forbes 100 Top Career Website Blogging4Jobs (and podcast) and the publisher of The Recruiters Lounge. Her media features include Forbes, Fortune, and Entrepreneur Magazines as well as many other media outlets. She is the CEO and founder of Xceptional HR and writes a lot about HR technology.

The Voice of Job Seekers-Episode 102BP

She recently wrote about using Blab or Periscope for your job search, and I asked her to discuss the “why” and strategies anyone can use:

  • What are the purpose and goal are helpful strategies in using video through Blab or Periscope
  • Jessica said that lighting, fresh face, and make-up are important elements in connecting with recruiters and hiring managers
  • You don’t have to target one particular subject as you can talk about your mantra for today, or taking people on your journey with Blab or Periscope
  • Video interviewing is more commonplace now, so people have to become more comfortable with cameras
  • Video also unveils the voices in the back of our heads in how it shows what we perceive as negative (hair, facial expressions, etc.). Blab and Periscope can help with the need for practice
  • You want to use these tools to be comfortable and collective enough to “Wow” the hiring manager
  • Jessica said we don’t have to be experts but provide a platform to be noticed and not necessarily perfect
  • Think about your industry and how it uses video. How can you contribute in a special way?
  • You can  use Periscope or Blab as a way of introducing yourself or as a demo. Are you in the hospitality industry? Do you interface with customers? This will demonstrate your strengths
  • Companies can’t train great personalities so using these tools in an opportunity to demonstrate when a resume or other career marketing tools can’t
  • You can use Periscope or Blab as a tool for informational interviews (or business conversations). Have a show where you put companies in the spotlight and ask them about their hiring process, what positions they’re hiring for, etc
  • More companies are beginning to use Periscope and Blab to connect with potential candidates
  • Live recording audio or video is scary for employers because they can’t take it back. Jessica shares her experience with employers using social networks tools
Do you need help with resume writing or career direction? Do you need coaching or instruction?I can help.

Here’s a summary of our discussion:

    • Jim says job seekers are still challenged with keeping skill sets current
    • Companies will automate most of their  businesses and if you don’t evolve, it will be more difficult
    • The access to information is increasing and find videos, podcasts, and ebooks to help people advance in their careers and industries
    • Those enslaved to the status quo will always fall far behind because technology always changes and evolves. As technology advances, so must you

    • Jim says working for top companies, or startups (or award-winning) keep you interested to their competitive companies and selective whenever possible
    • Indeed is a great resource outside of job postings especially to find out the hot markets and keywords, and search online occupational outlook (Bureau of Labor and Statistics)
    • Cyber-security and plumbing are two hot fields Jim recommends researching if you are looking for sustainable careers
