Two weeks ago, Payscale.com released survey results on underemployment. They report 46% of Americans feel they’re underemployed. I encourage you to go the site to read the survey for yourself as it breaks down the following:

  • most common job titles of the underemployed
    • most common job titles of the underemployed
    • percentage of underemployed by degree level (from high school GED to MD)
    • % of underemployed by gender
    • % of underemployed by degree level + major
    • % of underemployed workers and a break down by reason for underemployment
Let me if you’re underemployed current and share some of your challenges. Here’s how you can join the discussion:
      1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your thoughts to the same number
      2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
      3. Send email feedback to [email protected]

Your MBA or JD is not Enough with Payscale.com (1)

Katie Bardaro is the Vice President Data & Analytics and Lead Economist at Payscale.com.

Here are highlights from our discussion:

  • Underemployment as an epidemic in the U.S.
  • Underemployment is an important consideration when we look at the economic health of the country
  • MBA not having the expected ROI (Return on Investment)
  • Huge divergence in earning and job opportunities
  • The great recession affected graduate degrees made new grads shift in career possibilities (part-time or continue school)
  • The survey measure two catagories: Those who feel they are not utilizing their education and those with a part-time position wanting to work full-time
  • STEM careers have many ways to get the skills needed to change careers. Online certification and experience don’t require the degree
  • Opportunity and underemployment gap exists, women are funneled into lower positions with lower pay and less movement

I’ve wanted to do a show to prepare young people to be job-ready for a while now. It is critical that teens learn the processes and skills to get a job. Youth unemployment last year increased to more than 20 million as the talent gap becomes more defined. Natascha Saunders is a Youth Career Coach, who will help us understand how to prepare young people to be job-ready.

Let me know your thoughts about this episode. Here’s how you can expand the conversation:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number
  2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
  3. Send email feedback to [email protected]

Preparing Young People to be Job Ready

Let me share more about Natascha. She is the founder of Youth Career Coach, Incorporated. She is a certified career coach and also a Ph.D. candidate, Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) (ABD), Organizational Leadership & Communication at Northeastern University.  Her media expertise has been displayed on ABC, COX, and WHUR radio.

Here are some highlights from our conversation:

  • Natascha saw how students erroneously filled out academic and employment applications—it inspired for her to start coaching young people
  • Although she had a lot of academic credentials, she felt the need to obtain a coaching certification
  • She also has coached executives, and she explains the similarities between coaching teens and adults
  • Teens are more focused on short-term goals although long-term change is frequent and eminent. Adults often need to conduct a stealth job search. Both teens and adults are challenged with confidence
  • Natascha sees the challenges of young adults constant change of focus. She digs into the reason why—calling it reverse management
  • Educate and problem solving are essential skills in her work with teens

Summer Fashion to Boost Your Personal Brand (1)

Aaja is an image consultant and brand strategist whose client list includes Babyface (yes, the singer/songwriter/producer) and Bianca Golden, America’s Top Model Contestant. Aaja’s media features include WVON in Chicago, JET Magazine, and Today’s Chicago Woman Magazine.

Here are a few highlights from our conversation:

-Best professional looks for the summer especially the interview

-Layer and dress for comfort

-Think light, patterns, a little jewelry

-Men well groomed, beard trimmed, nails manicured, and shirts tucked in

-Men must be sure the half-shaved look is good for the interview. Authenticity is important, but when in doubt

-For women, grooming is as important as clothes

-Humid temperatures need adjustments in office wear

-What to have for the ever-changing weather — sunny to rain to 100% humidity in some places–and keep it professional and on-brand

–Best shoe wears for rainy weather

-Rain boots are essential and more professional

-Arrive early to transition from outside wear

-Trench coat is classic, polished, and professional to maintain day look

-Umbrella quality is necessary, worth the investment and show personality
