11 Ways to Hit a Home Run in Your Job Search

I know. Baseball season is here and I’m talking about home runs. Hear me out (no pun intended). But this is important.

You will fall behind the competition if you don’t stand out in today’s job search. For example,

You can’t have it both ways. Want to hit a homerun? The effort to stand out means taking a chance you’ll be tagged out.

 

The idea came from this article on business, but I know it applies to other meaningful concepts. Many of us want to do things we’re comfortable with for success, but doing something that makes us uneasy or takes us out of our comfort zone are usually the best methods to achieve our goals.

There are things in your job search you haven’t tried yet, conversations you’re unwilling to have, and things you’re doing that are fruitless and should stop. Here are 11 of them:

 

1) Keeping track of accomplishments.

The question “How do you add value to your work?” can be dumbfounding, but necessary to answer. Interviewers will seek it out in many ways and the way to solve it is to know (and remember) your successes. Performance reviews, emails, meeting minutes, conversations with you and without you complimenting you are critical. Document all of it and know it’s gold throughout your career.

 

2) Public speaking.

It’s horrific, and sometimes it requires the casting out of demons, but for the sake of imbibing this point, let’s eliminate speeches. Let’s say it’s a panel interview and you have to be direct with five people. If you don’t, you won’t get the job. It’s a little more complicated than casting out demons, but there are many ways to get over the fear.

 

3) Cutting down distractions significantly.

Few people cut out television completely, but cutting it down could serve you well. A successful job search requires building up your personal brand. Few people take the time to build their brand (a huge mistake!), especially in the beginning stages. You need time, and too many job seekers are mindlessly mesmerized by television. Or social media. Or Tik Tok. You get the drift.

 

4) Seeking feedback.

I overheard a conversation where one person said their mentor never tells them anything negative. The friend said, “You mean critical?” The answer, “Yes! She knows I don’t like critique!” I can’t imagine having the mentors I had in my life without their constructive feedback.

Another way to look at it is how training is effective. Accreditation is important because of the useful and the response to required feedback. Can you imagine elementary schools with no feedback? Higher education?

 

5) Persistence through trials.

Finding a job or a career is hard work. If you’re without a job, for most of us the job search is the priority in our lives. If we’re employed and conducting a stealth job search, then our priorities shift to take care of the most urgent need.

6) Networking without a networking event.

The cliche, everything is networking and networking is everything in job search success. There are everyday conversations with opportunities behind them. If you’re intentional, you won’t need a scary networking event. Then there are social media channels where it’s expected to be social. Stop playing! You’re one conversation away from a breakthrough.

 

7) Defending your career choices.

Protecting your career choice is not always a negative conversation. Sometimes it clarifies your choices, especially if you’re passionate about it. You don’t always have to defend it with people who are most critical about any choice you make, but some people do care about you (and only you can discern this) and want to know your “why.”

 

8) Training others.

Training is the new learning, especially with the access to information and tools available to us. Even if it is one-on-one, it is a real lead generator. People are always looking for a knowledgeable person with patience and communication skills to help them learn something new.

 

9) Asking for compensation.

To accompany #8, ask and expect compensation for your time in a tactful and reasonable way. You’ll find it adds value to your needs and career. To an employer, getting paid for your training, consulting, or coaching shows you’re serious about your career. Sometimes an employer hesitates, thinking you may leave if consulting or coaching takes off. Then again, it may not be their business to know you are getting paid for it or achieving success at it. It is common for people to have side hustles, part-time jobs, or interests outside of work. You have a valuable skill, and people should compensate you for your time.

 

10) Promoting yourself.

When sharing your accomplishments don’t simply say, “I’m great!” It’s a fact that your accomplishments add credibility, which is more career advancing and personal brand building. Putting these adjectives from you with “I’m…” sends the wrong message. Credibility and specificity carry far more weight to others than any adjective we can put out there ourselves. Promote yourself for the credibility.

11) Confronting time-consuming complex problems.

Everyone values time, but what about the value to have a chance to solve career-defining issues? Patience and persistence are boosts to your career if you want to impress employers. Document how you address deeply involved projects and leverage them to demonstrate competency.

 

We expect miracles to take place too often because a method we try requires little effort. Since looking for jobs is inertia-sucking, we loathe the exhaustion to our body, brains, and heart without realizing that progress is needed to succeed. You don’t need to do everything, but relying on comfortable measures invalidates the sweet spot. Go ahead and aim for that home run. You’ll be tagged out at times, your uniform will be filthy, but you’ll be a better base runner.

The One Job Search Strategy for Perpetual Career Advancement

I had great mentors during my career, and three of them were bosses, and all of them were women. They leveraged their position to help position me to advance my career. Not only were they meaningful teachers of what they shared with me, but were also practitioners of what they taught me. One of them taught me a significant job search and career strategy you’ll want to use from now on. 

One of my mentors and bosses was Eileen, who, from the day she became my boss, assured me she would prepare me to take her position when she moved. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, but her preparation took me to the next step. To this day, there was one thing she told me I wanted to share with you. It aligns with my mantra of job search being a lifestyle. 

I shared with Fast Company several months ago (reprinted by The Ladders) that Eileen told me once no matter how well or not so well things were going in her current job or career, she interviewed once a year with another company. I thought that was crazy at the time, but I remembered it but did NOT practice at the time. But it did come in handy later in my career, especially as I shared this advice with past clients and job seekers over the years. 

Many of you are still fighting the idea of managing your career closer than you have in the past. Here are the benefits you’re missing:

  1. Unless you are actively involved in an industry organization (and every job has its industry), interviewing is the only you’ll find out how the landscape is changing. Today, most industries and jobs evolve because of tech upgrades, making things easier, faster, bigger, or stronger. You may think that you work the cash register, yet you’re in the retail or department stores industry if you work at Best Buy. You can start by checking the list of organizations at Job Stars. By default, you may consider joining a customer service organization (or name a logical association with your profession) such as the National Customer Service Association. 
  2. Job interviewing is a skill, and there are trends constantly changing in all industries. You’ve heard much about video interviews are becoming a staple in screening applicants and job candidates before meeting with a decision-maker. You probably didn’t know some industries use panel interviews and require the candidate to engage in more than five rounds of interviews. Those are important if the last time you’ve interviewed was two years ago. 
  3. Your ability to adapt will be tested either by the process itself or within the interviewing process through questioning. If you fail to articulate your challenges during the pandemic through trials or transition, you may not resonate with a company that has endured multiple challenges from the beginning. 
  4. Interviewing more often will challenge your knowledge of emerging technology. Companies prefer someone who is tech-ready from day one. Others may train you, but it helps to know what’s trending. You can decide if you need to invest in updated training or add value to your current employer by mentioning what the industry is using.  They may ask you to make suggestions. There’s no need for me to tell you what that means to every employer. 
  5. Interviewing each year could increase your network when you are getting referrals if you’re thoughtful in creating great conversations. Let’s say you don’t get a job offer from the company you meet with, but you ask them to connect with you on LinkedIn. By maintaining that relationship opens many possibilities to get other referrals or interview again at a better time when you’re a better fit. 
  6. You’ll get used to customizing your storytelling abilities to each employer. No one tells a story, a joke, anecdote the same way each time. As you understand the industry at large, you’ll appreciate each interview will listen for a resonating narrative. 
  7. Industry terminology also changes, like the direction of the wind. I’m sure if I told you to “cool out,” you’ll think I’m a Cro-Magnon man. Similarly, if you use a term, you think it sounds like you’re knowledgeable, and it isn’t changing the way an interviewer sees you. 

The more frequently you interview while you’re employed, the better you’ll prepare yourself for when it’s time to change jobs or careers. I didn’t discuss in this article how this practice can help you bring more value to your current company or provide you with additional intrinsic motivation. You can also decide if there is a future in the industry and decide it’s time to explore other options. Over time, you control the pivots and advances and are caught unready for economic or sector crashes.

7 Career Advancing Risks to Take in 2021

There are times when you need to take some risks when advancing your career. If you’re not vigilant of your industry, upskilling your skills from familiarity to mastery, or deepening your relationships with connections, you’re behind.

Job search is a part of your regular life in some way to prepare for the worse. As you know, this could happen anytime.

Maybe you’re doing the right things, but your career advancement and job search seem stagnant. Well, I got you. You may need to step out and take a few chances. No, you’re not exactly stepping out on a ledge, but a shake-up helps you to gain traction as much as it exposes your lack of comfort.

Here are a few ideas of risks to help you with taking the next steps in your career:

 

1. Use video to express thought leadership, teach, or recap new learning.

Not only will you capture more eyes on any social network (especially LinkedIn and Instagram), but also for potential business partners and employers to get to know you. It doesn’t matter if it’s a raw or unpolished presentation. Your viewers will be more impressed and riveted your willingness to “put yourself out there.” It also speaks to your courageousness more than anything else. You, too, can have a friend like Miss Fe Marie, who, outside of her Board of Education job, has a YouTube channel with nearly 21,000 subscribers in its five years. She had a video from 2018 with more than 800K views and making the most of the opportunities the exposure is bringing.

2. To start building your next career.

As you know, your journey starts with curiosity and wonder, but often it is the beginning of fulfillment and possibilities. Just having a job to pay the bills is alright for many, but more professionals want to have more options. Gary worked for the government as a forensic account for 32 years, yet his passion was electric. Before retiring, he trained and worked as an electrician and enjoyed working when and how he wants.

3. Start career-advancing collaborations online or offline.

Volunteering is an excellent way to partner with an organization and building on initiatives from the ground up. Since technology is a continually evolving possibility, those adept at learning new technology could leverage non-profit organizations to grow new skills and build partnerships. Most importantly, they can develop a reputation in new technology, process, or an in-demand talent. Collaborations also create a reason to network with people you know who do similar work. In the long-term, these connections can lead you to the right opportunities without scouring the Internet.

 4. Negotiate better compensation

Although negotiation is an expected transaction to start a new job, most professionals don’t research diligently at the beginning of their job search. Even more, don’t strategize to create opportunities in the positions they hold. Money isn’t the only negotiable commodity as compensation. Working remotely also brings you opportunities to get compensated for equipment, software, flexible time, training, insurance, and more.

5. Be more visible for employers to find you.

I would want you to be mindful of what your employer may think without risking your current job. The more you show your value and that you’re valued, it will be the right anecdote to get noticed by employers, recruiters, and referrers. By emphasizing importance through accomplishments and results speaks loudly and attractively to those who desire those results. From posting awards for exceeding qualitative and quantitative benchmarks to showing photos of volunteering time to charitable causes could open more possibilities.

6. Enter competitive skill competitions (not necessarily a contest)

One way to stay on top of industry trends and the skills to remain relevant is to create content around it. Sometimes this means competing in industry contests or at least creating content where essential feedback is offered. It doesn’t have to be an official competition where prizes are provided to be considered competitive. When someone within an industry is recognized for their work, another person will eventually come along and do it better.

7. Becoming well-known

Most people will respond by saying, “I’m not trying to become famous,” when that’s not what I mean. Being well-known can mean you’re creating demand for your work outside your 9-5 job within your industry or local organization. Your visibility at times can make a demand contingent on the scarcity of your skills. It’s not a bad idea to appear on a podcast or two, or a video interview, radio or television news appearing as an expert. Peer-reviewed white papers increase your knowledge and credibility to become a resource for other professionals.

What I’ve discovered is the increase in possibilities as a result of contributions. You’ll likely experience demand for your work the more you are interested in serving or helping your peers. Everybody wants to find a job when they need to in the shortest amount of time. It helps to assure familiar relationships knowing the value you give will eventually provide an open the door to career advancement.
