Strategic Connections in Networking with (1)

We talk a lot about job networking here on the podcast, but it is a job search impediment for so many job seekers. It is an essential tool in the 21st century to find business connections and job opportunities. Anne Baber is one of four authors of the new book, Strategic Connections: The New Face of Networking in a Collaborative World is my guest offers a different approach to networking. This conversation will provide pragmatic and proactive strategies to discover and deepen your career networking and your ability to increasing performance production.

Many thanks to the publicists at AMACOM Books for sending me a review copy and setting up the interview with Anne. This is a holistic perspective for your career trajectory, not just to find the next opportunity.

What do you like about networking? What do you dislike about it? I would love to hear or read your feedback.

I can entertain your feedback in three ways:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708.365.9822
  2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
  3. Send email feedback to [email protected]

If you are a career professional who advise job seekers and adds feedback whether it’s advice or a differing opinion, I will include a link in future show notes and read your comments on an upcoming show. Just let me know if it’s OK with you.

Anne is the Principal of Contact Counts LLC and author of seven other books and an expert in business networking. Her firm has a worldwide reach of clients for the last 24 years.

Here are a some of the highlights of our discussion:

  • Anne stated that over the last 25 years of research through her firm shows that only 20% of people are “natural networkers.” They get. They don’t need any help. The rest of us need to study up on networking
  • Networking can be overwhelming, even for extroverts, who also needs to know how networking works
  • Anne offered this twist on a standard line we hear all of the time, “I was working for XYZ company, but THEY lost my job!” She says that you didn’t lose your job, and THEY (the company that laid you off) lost your job. Then this will open the door for you to focus on a specific talent, not on a broad set of skills.
  • Anne shares the six stages of relationships in networking you go through or create
      1. Accident. You are not going to meet that person again unless you make it happen
      2. Acquaintance. You meet this person through someone else. You can meet them again and find them
      3. Associates. You can join a community or group. You can make them an active relationship if you are giving. It is likely that the person will look for ways to give back to you. Be ready to give
      4. Actives. You exchange valuable information with this person. This is the person you want to have a great conversation
      5. Advocates. They are ready to go out on the limb for you
      6. Allies. They are ready and willing to help you because you have known them for a long time

Anne cautions that you ruin chances when you ask for things too soon. She suggests six meetings before trust is created. People must see your character and competence before trust is given

Job leads often come from people they know, so it’s not through the 1st person (one of the six) but the 2nd (one of the six’s contact)

If you want to subscribe to our iTunes feed, and if you enjoy the show, please write a review for us about this interview.

What questions would you have asked? What would you like to know? Let me know what you think?

Today's guests on the podcast

Without keywords, your resume will not see the light of day. And without be audacious in your networking and interviewing, you may go unnoticed in your job search.

Coach Jennie

Jennie Mustafa-Julock (@CoachJennie)is so much more than a life coach, and she probably prefers being called an Audacity Coach. She is the founder of coachjennie.com, and we’re talking about being audacious job seekers/careerists.

Here are highlights of our discussion:

  • Jennie stated audacity has nothing to do with being “introverted” or “extroverted” but wanting making something special happen.
  • Audacity is more of a lifestyle because you have an unending amount of potential. It is a quality and an approach to life.
  • Networking audacious is remembering to be you, instead of morphing into the person who you think you ought to be.
  • We talk exclusively about what impresses others about audacious people. Confidence, ambition, and tenacity are attractive and perceived as someone to know.

Erin Kennedy

I’ve know Erin Kennedy (@ErinKennedyCPRW) through her blog and Twitter for a few years now, and her wealth of knowledge is always on display on her blog, Exclusive Executive Resumes. Her blog is a Forbes top 100 Website for Your Career, and she has more certifications and letters after her name than letters in the alphabet. Certified resume writer multiple times over.

Here are highlights of our discussion:

  • Getting out to network is a key to learn the target industry, and putting the essential information and keywords on paper as it relates to you
  • Erin pointed out that different countries may use keywords and buzzwords interchangeably. Erin defines buzzwords as taking the resume down a notch by using words that are overused and are fluff such as, “creative thinker” and “energetic.” Keywords are factual, and back up what you’ve done
  • Keywords are obtained from the job description, and are essential and what employers want.
  • Employers are interested in the how, the functionality, and how you back it up. Erin says, “…that it has to stick.”
  • Erin stated that resume has to have a focus, and relevant keywords will achieve that focus employers desire

I referenced in the conversation the show about writing a resume for the Applicant Tracking System.

Today, you’ll probably get two vivid pictures: College degrees, Bachelors’ or Master’s, are not the home run of education. Some will say that the value of a Master’s has significantly depreciated, but there is a compelling case on both sides of the argument.

We do know that job networking is essential, and the right connections will build your career for now and the future.

JohnMuscarello

John Muscarello (@jmmuscarello) coaches professionals of all ages to build strong and powerful connections including employers. He is the founder of Start Networking Today, and his day job is a digital marketing and public relations specialist.

In our conversation, we discuss how anyone can be great at networking just by being yourself. I expected him to have this robust and electric personality, but really, he is pretty laid back. John emphasizes in his coaching that anyone can offer value to connect with people. He stated perspective has to do with your ability to connect with people who can help you. It is definitely worth reading his blog about how to write a “G.R.E.A.T.” thank-you note.

Jamie Broadnax (@blackgirlnerds) was my guest on episode 13, founder of Black Girl Nerds, a very popular niche site shares her experience about the job interviews she participated in and the lengthy process with a company she was once employed by. The job interviews were with a Fortune 100 company, and she thought achieving a Masters’ in marketing was enough to get the job.  Jamie also wrote a blog post, Get that Job Girl, on her site to offer the help she wish she had at the time of her job interviews. There are some of wow moments you don’t want to miss in that segment. You are going to be stunned by her experiences, but you will cheer her response to it.
