LinkedIn is constantly changing their features and functionality to the point where new and old users lose sight of LinkedIn’s value. Bob McIntosh is a purveyor of all things LinkedIn for job seekers. He is my guest as discuss what features are best for job seekers, and a couple of features not so much.

Connections of
Filtering of information, seeing the connections of connections, possibly using the searched connections to meet new people.
Video
If you’re able to film yourself and have the right equipment to provide quality. If they have practiced their 30-second commercial (or elevator speech) the value the person offers could shine through.
Search for jobs
 The easy apply makes it easier to apply for jobs. The user’s LinkedIn profile is sent. The connections you have in common with the recruiter could work in the user’s favor.
Salary insights
Although you may not use your specific title, you can find your value in the market. You still want to use the prolific salary guides (Salary.com, PayScale, Glassdoor).
Wish it were more useful:
Messaging
Bob thought this was useful but tempts users to become lazy and use it like a text. Remember when you’ree communicating with an employer.
Analytics
The constant change sometimes confuses the users but you can get an idea who is viewing your profile.

Being fired vs. Being laid off

Some people are chuckling right now but there are some differences that are important to know your accessible benefits. Mostly, there is a difference in the employee’s performance. Being fired has everything to do with performance, and laid off has nothing to do with the employee’s performance. If the company offers a severance package, and you’re fired, likely you’re disqualified from receiving anything. Read here for more information!

If you’re trying to attract the eyes of employers and/or recruiters, or even more people on LinkedIn, you need to read this article on Inc. magazine by Suzanne Lucas (@EvilHRLady). She shares an anecdote to how to get more eyes on your LinkedIn updates (not articles but can be applied through your updates).

Why is it hot? Since you’re trying to meet the right people, you need to meet more people and yes, impress those who can refer or guide you.

I gave it a shot and sure enough, I got more than 7,000 views on one update. That’s more views I ever received.

Eliminating the Unconscious Bias in Hiring

I was fascinated by articles discussing the Blendoor app. It was developed and founded by Stephanie Lampkin was able to get venture capital funding for it. The Blendoor app is a blind recruiting tool  eliminating features used to screen candidates from “unconscious bias.” I consider this a game changer especially if it minimizes or eliminates discrimination. The only important elements in hiring are skills and experience.

Let me now what you think about the Blendoor app’s possibilities. Here’s how you can comment:

    Stephanie has degrees from Stanford and MIT and at one point, worked for Microsoft and Google. After seeing studies of how bias plays a major factor in hiring, she wanted to make an app eliminating bias based on race, creed, ethnicity etc. Stephanie has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, Black Enterprise, and TechCrunch.
    • Stephanie created the Blendoor app out of seeing the need to provide more diverse job seekers
    • We discussed how ethnic names are negatively subject to bias
    • Directly combats the myth diversity hiring means “lowering the bar”
    • The goal is for the app to provide 100% merit based hiring
    • Stephanie stated although women are more likely to graduate from college and score higher on tests, bias unconsciously is a major obstacle
    • We discuss the features in the app and why it stands out
