#Resilience

Struggles are a part of life and makes us better to endure them. This Fast Company article shows up how we can endure and then thrive. Every job search episode has a struggle. Sometimes, it comes from our having to let resolve set in. We know we need to get it done, but there are times we haven’t found resolution and success eludes us. It’s good we learn from the process difficulties take us through. If any thing, we learn how to thrive so we can help others persist.

If you give people the security to feel their contributions matter whether manager or mail person. It’s your soft skills, baby!

 94% of recruiting professionals believe an employee with stronger soft skills has a better chance of being promoted to a leadership position than an employee with more years of experience but weaker soft skills.

They set you apart from the crowds if you can demonstrate them either through recommendations, references, or a recording of how you use them training others. The power of seeing them in action or someone speaking on your behalf makes you memorable. If you want to compete, understand how you can demonstrate the soft skill functionality in your profession.

You are your own compensation agent…

The passive – aggressive approach to negotiation is tempting but ill advised in the article on salary negotiation. The basics are covered here but mostly, these are questions frequently asked and most people need to be reminded to implement. Negotiating compensation will be ongoing. No one will prompt you to negotiate or ask for a salary enhancement if you don’t. Keep this article close by as the way we will need to engage the discussion will be different than the past. YOU will need to be your own agent  if you don’t have one currently.

The perfect supplement to the above article is this one written by my friend Cassidy Rush (@cassidyhrush) from Payscale. She cites a study stating 57% of job candidates don’t even try to negotiate any part of their package.  I have done several shows on negotiating your compensation. I will add not only my show with Kwame Christian, but also the collaborative article featured on Fox Business. Perhaps we need to concentrate more on the fear of negotiating more than techniques? I would love to hear your thoughts.

What’s hot and what’s not in job search?

Grammar is like vegetables, everyone knows it’s good for them, few love it, rest of us will endure them to get to dessert. Shoutout to Susan Rooks (@Grammar_Goddess) who brought up a great point while we were working on one of my projects. She pointed out in my document where I had quotations and apostrophes were the straight kind, and some were curly. She also mentioned she sees it all of the time.

Why is that important to mention? It is worth the time to get grammar help for our documents, particularly the ones needed for our careers. Not everyone can  or should proofread our products especially pertaining to our career communication. It is one of the few places where we add value directly to who we work for or serve. The details matter and I’m glad to have Susan on my team. To find out more about her proofreading services, go here!

**Gasp**Informational Interviews

If you don’t know how I feel about the term “informational interviews” then listen to this episode where I discuss why it’s not the best term. I prefer “business discussion.” Having said that, these meetings should be brief, as in 10-15 minutes. If you ask for 10 minutes of someone’s time, rarely will they schedule it in. If it goes beyond 10 minutes, that’s great, but be more conscientious of the time than the other person. This article is good to start using as a guide.

“The social media giant is currently testing a new Resume / CV feature that lets users share their work experience with their friends. The new addition expands on the standard ‘Work and education’ section, but won’t publicly display all information about your credentials.”

The details are sketchy right now, but is this necessary? There would be a lot of lousy resumes online. But in the long term, the good ones stand out. This means you’ll need to revise the cliches inundating your current resume.
