Last year we reported that 1.5 million of college graduates under 25 are jobless or under-employed. And while diving in to find out what these numbers imply, we found a couple of things– typically, Millennials feel a sense of entitlement and career centers are not being utilized to their fullest potential.

Now, fast-forward to today, and this situation is still affecting many of you. So while revisiting this topic, let’s discuss the step prior to applying to your first job and even before your first internship– choosing the right education. (And, for those of you who’ve already graduated, take heed! You never know– the opportunity to go back to school may present itself one day in your future.)

This infographic produced by Northeastern University’s online MBA program, states that 39% of employers around the world feel graduates lack the right skills needed for entry-level jobs. Furthermore, 25% of students claim their college focuses on hands-on approaches, while 72% of educational institutions believe they’re adequately preparing students.

And since colleges can often be savvy with how they present their offerings, these tips might help break down the veil to reveal what you need to know before making the decision that can impact the rest of your life:

  • Find schools that focus on experimental, multimedia, workplace-relevant teaching styles
  • Look for colleges that partner with local employers– that’s a good sign that your acquired skill set may directly apply to future careers
  • Apply to schools with flexible options such as online classes, allow you to work while in school, applying your education directly to your current position
  • Remember that you don’t have to settle for the first college that accepts you into their program

I wanted to reintroduce David Nicola, Director of Career Services at Laurus College in California from our conversation last June because I think he embodies the spirit that is engaging students using social media to help with the job hunt. If every college had an advocate such as David, the overall state of the relationships with career services and students would be in a better place.

In talking with him over the last few months both of us agree of how colleges and universities should be more aggressive in directing students to think “career development” from day one. Students at his college are required to attend workshops about resume writing and etc. at the beginning of his or her college degree.

I mentioned in the show and previously that I met David in the Linked In forums and connected with him on other social networking sites. He is quite passionate about helping people in general and students in finding solutions to their job search challenges. You can also find articles that he has written on different career and recruiting sites where he gives solid advice on the job search.

In this episode #7, Bianca Thompson “HR Sassy Girl,” aka “The Sassy One” gives her two cents on recruiters/hiring company that use social media as the primary way for selecting and hiring candidates. Her experience in the Architectural and Engineering firm the portfolio is emphasized, and at times, the resume error takes a back seat to the showcased work. She shares her concern that the freedom of expression is emphasized more than the potential candidates career potential to contribute. She makes it clear that social media should only be a tool, but not the solely used tool to judge candidates.

We also discuss her background in HR which she has been in for the last 14 years.

We also answer two questions from readers and listeners. The first question asked how she can come to the United States and get a job in Human Resources after only one year of working in a foreign country with an MBA from the same country.

The other question was from someone who wanted to target his or her resume to qualify for three positions. Bianca answer was nothing short of blunt in stating that a resume attempting to appeal to three different careers would only be damaging their chances because of a lack of focus.

This interview was done in a public setting, but the audio has great quality.
