It’s Friday!! Your job search could use some additional resources so I’ve compiled a few of them.  .I’ll read them, and you can feel free to comment on them in any form you’d like including leaving a message on the “send voicemail” button on your right. I’ll try to keep it short, fresh, and informative. If you have some I need to know about, tweet me @MarkADyson!

What’s new in job search?

I encourage you to watch this talk by Farai Chideya “The Episodic Career.” A lot of us call it the “Portfolio Career, ” but for creatives, it’s a great option if we know the traditional 9-5 is more of impedance. Not only the multiple streams of income is sexy, but also necessary where terms of any employment are not guaranteed.

CNN reports more than a third of Americans are participants in the gig economy or what many would say is the side hustle. There are five suggestions in making your opportunities more stable financially. The challenge is not completely understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of setting up entities and tax protections. This article provides more clarity and resources if you are seriously considering this as the way you’ll work.

This job search trend is hot!

Check out 5 new LinkedIn features with potential to enhance your career:

  • Career Interests has a setting for you to let recruiters know you’re entertaining opportunities without public alerts.
  • LinkedIn salary helps you research salary like never before
  • Need a career coach? The LinkedIn Profinder can help you customize a search for one

Read the rest of the article for the other additional resources.

Something you won’t hear very often

A recent article from The Job Network offers advice you won’t find often:

  • Job requirements are negotiable
  • Pick a boss not a company
  • Don’t be afraid to take a pay cut for the right experience

It’s one of the most informative infographics I’ve seen in a long time.

Well, that’s it for this week. Next week I will offer some more tools from around the Internet! Have a great week.

Desk or Labor Jobs Here Today, Consider Them Gone Tomorrow

Desk or Labor Jobs Here Today, Consider Them Gone Tomorrow

Below is a Quora response I wanted to share. The original is here.

I don’t think experts think these two jobs (desk or labor) will exist for the long term. It might be time to reframe the question and the discussion at large. For right now, we still talk about white collar vs. blue collar jobs.

The short answer is contingent on training, certifications, and industry experience often determines salary. Traditional labor and desk jobs are paying $100,000+ depending on location. This article features five blue collar jobs paying six figures (5 blue-collar jobs that pay $100,000 a year ).

It would be helpful to know your aspirations and experience to customize an answer for you.

Both types of jobs, desk or labor, require some technology and with robots on the verge of taking over office and labor jobs, makes pursuing either job a futile goal. It requires research, and it’s best to do it before pursuing the career of your choice.

Studies in recent years say 40% (or a little less) will be contractors or freelancers by 2020. (Here’s Why The Freelancer Economy Is On The Rise) It’s possible everyone will spend time at a desk at some point. I would recommend a mind shift to think about the company you want to work for, deep dive into your “why” and then determine the type of job you’re best suited.

You should also look at sites like Salary.com (Salary.com), PayScale (PayScale – Salary Comparison, Salary Survey, Search Wages), and Glassdoor (Glassdoor Job Search | Find the job that fits your life) to study job, location, hazards (if it applies). Depending on where you are in the world, you may need to look by country. The site JobMob (All Together Now To Get Jobs in Israel and Around the World.) has salary surveys and calculators for careers around the world ( Where to Research Job Market Salaries in 2016).

Finally, chasing a career because of money will mean you’ll ignore any learning curves, hazards, or lifestyle considerations. Although I would never recommend chasing the money, under those circumstances, today’s job seeker should consider a career with strings of options or a portfolio career (several mini-careers as multiple streams of income). This way, you aren’t reliant on a single option or income.

Job Search News for August 18, 2017

Here are some good reads of job search news for this week from around the web. I think I’ll keep the “job search” articles coming every Friday. I’ll read them, and you can feel free to comment on them in any form you’d like including leaving a message on the “send voicemail” button on your right. I’ll try to keep it short, fresh, and informative. If you have some I need to know about, tweet me @MarkADyson!

It’s happening all over the world

The company releases the annual report, reveals gender gap, like this trouble at the BBC!

Age – Unconscious Bias

Lawsuits are popping up as the nation’s workforce ages and as many longtime workers claim that they are deliberately targeted for such reductions. Although it’s hard to prove ageism, we all know it exists in generous proportions. Older workers can see the patterns, yet it remains a gray line that’s hard to see or detect and needs to be looked at carefully.

This job search trend is hot!

If there is any doubt what separates you from other job candidates–it is your personality. Read how to woo companies using text to reach out to potential candidates! There are software companies producing ways to screen candidates before interviewing them. Then there are the companies who are using text as a first interview. Although the article gives only a peek at the process, it’s bound to be revised over time or obliterated.

This job search trend not so much!

Many people are pretty passive or somewhat apathetic when it comes to inserting proper grammar in casual writing. Correct grammar is essential if you want to impress through social updates, emails, texts, and general correspondences. Susan Rooks (the Grammar Goddess) shares an article on correct punctuation. I try not to be the grammar police, but it’s so hard because sometimes I don’t know what people are saying. Here are her tips to improve punctuation in plain English!
