Why God Will Hire Noah Next Time (If There is a Flood)

A lot of people wish they had to the opportunity to hire someone. Out of the great men and women who ever lived, Noah stood alone as a man who will get a job completed by what he did, not what he said. Each job seeker must demonstrate clear competency, not just say or will the desire to work for an employer. Noah possessed the right skills, but had to have other tangible and visible talents (Read Genesis 6: 1ff).

If God is all-knowing, this is plausible and credible based on what is written. These are all my crazy ideas. I am not pushing religion on anyone. I have a perspective of that job seekers talk too much instead of offering professional acumen.

Consider Noah.

God was looking for more than just a carpenter. We can assume that carpenters were a dime a dozen, but there are attributes that weighed more than skill.

Read: Do Employers Understand You?

Character.

The day has come that a potential employee’s character is significant to the company’s brand. It is common now to sign agreements that you will behave, and not make a public spectacle of yourself. Employers are asking for Facebook passwords or requesting that you friend the company’s Facebook page to see that your activity is respectable.

Think about it. Noah was chosen amidst the chaos of the day. God didn’t need a Facebook page, but he looked beyond his work and saw exemplary character. He stood out not just as a builder, but also the next generation of his offspring would be closer to himself, righteous, spiritual, and accountable.

Skill.

Skill finishes projects, but what does it take to fulfill the vision. Self-control and listening must accompany any set of core competencies. In Noah’s case, God had a specific plan and vision. We don’t know if Noah understood God’s vision completely, but we do know that Noah perfectly followed through with God’s detailed and laborious instruction.

As mentioned, many Job seekers claim loudly about his or her skill, but fail to demonstrate how it fits the company’s plan and vision. There are not enough words to persuade others you are the best. Perfection is not expected, but offering ideas and worth produced by skill makes a convincing hiring proposition.

Job Search Hints—MLK’s Letter From A Birmingham Jail

Liked.

We can assume that God liked Noah because of his attention to detail, his family, and ability to match animals two by two; however, the bible never indicated any complaining. Then again, did Noah understand the bottom line about not having to tread water (shout out to Bill Cosby who suggested that Noah didn’t know).

God liked Noah because he could accomplish the tasks at hand without complaining. Complainers and whiners take the fun that is left in a meeting or working relationship. We know that being liked is good, but rarely understand how to likeable upon contact. Noah was industrious, although it was unknown if he had a sense of humor that God liked, but God liked him.

It takes a little imagination, but there are lessons to glean from Noah’s example. Each job seeker must find ways to translate his or her skills for an employer’s use.

How can you communicate better to show competency to employers? Let me know in the comments below.

Be Thankful For What You Got (It May Get You Hired)

Be Thankful For What You Got (It May Get You Hired)

Be Thankful For What You Got (It May Get You Hired)

Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangsta whitewalls, TV antennas in the back
You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you got.
Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin’ the scene with a gangsta lean

—William DeVaughn, “Be Thankful”

Gratitude is the heart of any season, but rarely is it at the heart of adverse situations, especially to get hired.  Whether unemployed or underemployed, one finds perspective in gratitude, and thus, a positive place for peace of mind.

The above song was a massive hit in my early teen years, in the early ‘70’s. The message is clear, instead of succumbing to envy with what you don’t have, appreciate what you do have. The complete version of the song is around 7 minutes long, and yet, the message is so effortless.

Be Thankful.

As teens, my friends and I focused on the gangsta (then it was “gangster”) white walls, the television in the car (anyone with a Cadillac with a T.V. in the back of your car, you have it made).  Having things is not a sign of success anymore. What defines success for you?

Be thankful, for what YOU got.

As I think about it, the value of the message was not having the Cadillac at all. Just be thankful for what you got. Yes, be content in every possible circumstance.

Then there is the line in the song that is the essence of the message to me that I didn’t get when I was younger:

…you can still stand tall.

It’s hard to stand tall when you are shallow. Small meaning what you don’t have in your possession. Anxiousness derives from focusing on the thing you don’t have. The lesson is to appreciate what is in your hands whether it’s family, talent, or opportunity. Remember that it is not just a holiday obligation, but a year round responsibility.

Sincere gratitude is the overflow of the heart. When you can’t help prioritize the expression of gratitude, people love it. Approach people you come in contact with thankfulness.

No telling that this new attitude may help you stand out among many candidates.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Where Are The Jobs? For Many, In Their Hands

I like this analogy about the ideal attitude for job seekers and jobs. We must remain in control of our careers to pursue jobs we want and need.

I wrote a blog post a couple of years ago using a story told by Ellie Wiesel who is a holocaust survivor, journalist, and professor. This story has remained with me for years. Although I did not put the thought into the post, the story he told means more now than ever:

The Perils of Indifference (An Excerpt)

The White House, April 12, 1999

The story is that, once upon a time, there was an emperor, and the emperor heard that in his empire there was a man, a wise man with occult powers. He had all the powers in the world. He knew when the wind was blowing what messages it would carry from one country to another. He read the clouds and he realized that the clouds had a design. He knew the meaning of that design.

He heard the birds. He understood the language of the birds; the chirping of the birds carried messages. And then he heard there was a man who also knew how to read another person’s mind. I want to see him, said the emperor. They found him. They brought him to the emperor. Is it true that you know how to read the clouds? Yes, Majesty. Is it true you  know the language of the birds? Yes, Majesty. What about the wind? Yes, I know.Okay, says the emperor. I have in my hands behind my back a bird. Tell me, is it alive or not?

And the wise man was so afraid that whatever he would say would be a tragedy, that if he were to say that the bird is alive, the emperor, in spite, would kill it. So he looked at the emperor for a longtime, smiled, and said, Majesty, the answer is in your hands. It’s always in our hands.

The outcome of employment  is in our hands. It is easy to blame government,  big companies, or our last employer for the lack of hiring.

What are 5 things that are in each of our hands that we control?

1. Give 100% effort. Putting 100% effort in using the tools at our disposal. Use 8 hours a day to scan job boards, network with new people, contact the people we know, research companies where we want to work, and call for informational interviews will bring us closer to employment.

2. Work while we are waiting for work. Temporary work is an option for everyone, and everybody to earn money while waiting for the job we want.

3. Volunteer. These are opportunities that can help us keep our skills up and possible learn new skills. If you have attended a computer class at the library, an opportunity to use new learned skills is in your hands.

4. Help others with their job search. The job search is not about you completely. It helps to pass on what you know, even if it is not reciprocated, but underestimate what you can learn in the process.

5. Aid us while re-tooling. There are books on self-improvement, resume and cover letter writing, networking, and grammar that are useful to increase employment value.

The answer is in our hands with ways to make a difference today. We decide the  outcome with what we do with our hands.
