My colleagues and I advise you (in most cases) to stay at your current job until you find a desired career. Well, my friend and sometimes co-host Keith Townsend (@VirtualizedGeek) broke the social rules. He announced his departure from his job at a Big four company for an unknown destiny.

Hannah Morgan (@careersherpa) is back to talk about her new book, “The Infographic Resume: How to Create a Visual Portfolio that Showcases Your Skills and Lands the Job.”

Welcome back to the podcast. I’d love to hear what you think about leaving a job before having another. Is that too big of a risk? Would you take the chance? Why or why not?

How about using an resume infographic? Have you tried it? Let me know if you do.

I’d love your feedback in these three ways:

Hannah is founder of CareerSherpa.net and a career contributor to U.S. News & World Report. Her as mentioned discusses in detail the value of creating and sharing an infographic resume, how to create it, and where you can create one today. Her book is available at bookstores near you, and on Amazon.

Here are the highlights from our conversation:

  • She interviewed people from different backgrounds such as IT, doctors, educators, and librarians that used the infographic resume and were offered opportunities
  • These tools will automatically generate an infographic resume based on your LinkedIn profile or entered work history and data:
  1. Kelly & Visual.ly: http://create.visual.ly/kelly/
  2. Pictocv: http://www.pictocv.com/
  3. Re.vu: http://re.vu/
  4. Vizualizie.me: http://vizualize.me/
  • Since the eye processes images faster than words, so it appeals to the short attention span
  • Places where an infographic can stand out is your blog, Pinterest, and LinkedIn as well as most social networks
  • It will have more impact to share it after creating it as well as tagging it with the right keys words for you to be found and indexed by Google

Keith has been writing and tweeting about his leaving his Big 4 job before obtaining another job. Keith has successfully leveraged his blog and social activities to display his knowledge and strengthen his personal brand. So far, the article has been read more than 2,00o times with more than 40 comments.

Here are some of the highlights of our discussion:

  • Keith is receiving interviews, which is hard to get for anyone, especially for a short period since resigning
  • Keith stated that influencers are retweeting his content because of the relationships he has nurtured throughout time
  • He said that he didn’t interview with anyone who doesn’t share the social values as a result of activities
  • Keith emphasized social networking allows the conversation to get to the point quicker

Melissa Cooley (@thejobquest) and I created a YouTube video on interviewing that I think many will find valuable. This is Melissa’s third appearance on the show. The two shows that we’ve done together are the most downloaded shows thus far. I would encourage you to go listen to both.

In this short segment (we have a full 23-minute conversation on YouTube), we banter about what you shouldn’t say in an interview. Many of them are obvious such as, cursing, bad grammar, or using big words that seem awkward and out of place. There is insight that Melissa provides in how it comes across when or if you do.

Please subscribe to the podcast through any podcast directory, but I’d love for you to leave an iTunes review. That is the largest directory and hopefully I have served you well for you to leave positive feedback.

Sandra Tedford (@wetalktoday) and I talk about why large companies should use entrepreneurs in their hiring. Many large companies shun entrepreneurs for many reasons but in cases where a small business provides opportunities to use a range of skills sets, it would be practical to hire he or she to work with the larger company.

In this conversation, Sandra and I discuss how she has been used to help companies set up their digital marketing plans and more. Her clients have used her in other ways such as, to consult in hiring personnel, pitching ideas and landing contracts with Fortune 500 companies, and roles directly affecting the direction of her client’s companies.  Sandra offered five reasons that entrepreneurs are good hires:

1) Understand the big picture. Entrepreneurs on a smaller scale developed vision for their companies and understand how difficult it is to reach a goal. We talk about how the entrepreneur will need to earn trust and concentrate on delivering value.

2) Victories are short lived. You are as good as your last success and that you can never become comfortable. Learning and mentoring should be a large part of the experience, and his or her career planning be more strategic.

3) Passionate about the business. Although passion is essential, nor the only attribute, but it does attract the employer. Employers can sense if the entrepreneur is excited about sustaining an interest for the duration of the job.

4) Understand the Value of Relationships. This is a very useful and valued asset especially if that is not the strength of the employer or manager.

5 Volunteer Efforts That Impress Employers

5 Volunteer Efforts That Impress Employers

Volunteering always looks great on a CV. Even if your experience isn’t directly related to the job you’re applying for, volunteer efforts show that you are an active person who is driven by motives other than financial. Having said this, there are definitely some volunteer efforts which look better than others when it comes to applying for jobs. Here are a few of the most impressive areas of volunteer experience to have when applying for a new position.

1) Relevant experience

Of course, the best voluntary experience you can have is in something relevant to your field. If you are looking to go into finance or accounting than helping a charity out with their accounts, is a fantastic experience to have. In the voluntary job market, you often have the chance to progress much faster than if you were doing the same job in the paid world. This often means that you can gain experience of leading and managing teams sooner and, therefore, make an excellent candidate for an employee.

2) Volunteering abroad

Volunteering abroad poses a few more obstacles than volunteering in your own neighborhood and employers will recognize the challenges you will have had to face. Employers are always looking for dynamic individuals with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to overcome difficult obstacles. Candidates who have had experience volunteering abroad often possess these qualities. Furthermore, in an increasingly globalised world, employers are looking for candidates with the ability to work internationally.

3) Something you love

If your volunteering work is not completely relevant to the career path you have chosen, make sure it helps a cause about which you are extremely passionate. It is very likely that once you get to a job interview, prospective employers will ask you lots of questions about your volunteering experiences. Therefore, it is very important that you are willing and able to talk at length about your volunteering. Employers look for genuine passion, and if you can convey this whilst talking about the work you’ve done for a brilliant cause then you are much more likely to make a good impression.

4) Training Included

Many charitable organizations may not be able to pay their volunteers, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be rewarded for your efforts. Volunteers can often obtain useful qualifications through volunteering, such as first-aid certification or leadership training, which will look good as new skills on your CV and make you all the more employable in the future. If you do get yourself a volunteering placement, ask if there are any exams or tests that you can take make the most out of your experience. Volunteering always looks great on a CV. Even if your experience isn’t directly related to the job you’re applying for, it shows that you are an active person who is driven by motives other than the purely financial. Having said this, there are definitely some volunteer efforts which look better than others when it comes to applying for jobs. Here are a few of the most impressive areas of volunteer experience to have when applying for a new position.

5) Full-time Volunteering Work

We can all volunteer for a few hours a week in a local charity, cherry-picking the parts of the job which appeal to us. Employers particularly commend commitment to many hours a week. The closer to a full-time position you can get, the better it will look to prospective employers. They want to know that you can handle a full-time job, whatever the hours may be. Working 40 hours a week for free demonstrates a huge level of commitment and suggests that you will have had to do less pleasurable parts of the job, as well as the fun hands-on parts. This will further prove your motives are far from the financial and make you a very desirable job candidate.

What volunteer projects do you plan to participate in this year? Please share.
